Photo Courtesy: Delly Carr (Swimming NSW)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The 21-year-old from Griffith University in Queensland, who is coached by <strong>Michael Bohl,<\/strong> clocked a time of 2:03.14 to clip 0.21 seconds off American Regan Smith\u2019s previous time set at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju.<\/p>\n<p>It was a world record that had stood for almost four years with many keen judges and coaches believing it was still \u201ca time too far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nsw.swimming.org.au\/events\/2022-nsw-state-open-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Page<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But not for Olympic champion Kaylee McKeown, the girl who dedicated her triple gold medal success in Tokyo to her late father Sholto and who has continued her whirlwind assault on world backstroke ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Last year she added the 200m world long course and short course titles and the Commonwealth Games 100 and 200m double.<\/p>\n<p>She now owns the world records for 100 and 200m long course and the 200m short course as this year\u2019s World Championships and next year\u2019s Paris Olympics fast approach.<\/p>\n<p>McKeown was in the zone when she walked onto pool deck, 20 minutes before the scheduled start of the race, but revealed later that she was forced into a rush with the meet running ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"KAYLEE MCKEOWN 200BK WR\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bAEaW77ZZbA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe race was actually swum 20 minutes earlier than it was scheduled on the time line \u2013 I was so rushed&#8230;and talking to (fellow competitor) <strong>Molly (O\u2019Callaghan)<\/strong> I said \u201dwhat\u2019s going on&#8230;?\u201d I actually like sitting in marshaling and kind of gathering my thoughts before my race, but I had no time for that, as I just pulled up my straps and went for it really&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And she was certainly still very much in a rush when she took off from lane four and wasted no time setting the pace with her 29.34 down the first 50m \u2013 just 0.28secs outside Smith\u2019s 2019 WR split.<\/p>\n<p>The Olympic, World and Commonwealth Games champion then split 1:00.73 at the 100m mark \u2013 still 0.36 outside world time but at the 150 both McKeown and Smith remarkably touched the wall at exactly the same time \u2013 in 1:31.84.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_524249\" style=\"width: 578px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-524249\" data-attachment-id=\"524249\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/breaking-kaylee-mckeown-smashes-200m-backstroke-world-record-with-a-stunning-203-14-in-sydney\/del_6604\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DEL_6604.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"2453,1635\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;NIKON D6&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1678435953&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;400&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;6400&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.000625&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"DEL_6604\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;DEL_6604&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Photo Courtesy: Delly Carr&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DEL_6604-700x500.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DEL_6604-1024x683.jpg\" class=\" wp-image-524249\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DEL_6604-700x500.jpg\" alt=\"DEL_6604\" width=\"568\" height=\"406\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-524249\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LOOK AT THE SCOREBOARD: Kaylee McKeown blown away when she looks at her time on the scoreboard. Photo Courtesy: Delly Carr (Swimming NSW).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But then McKeown unleashed a sizzling final 50m split of 31.30 \u2013 compared to Smith\u2019s 31.51 to set a new world mark \u2013 that will again surely take some beating.<\/p>\n<p>McKeown also revealed she struggled to fall in love with the pool again after her Tokyo triumphs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the Olympics I found it hard to get up behind the blocks again&#8230;.I\u2019m not sure, maybe after that Olympic phase, training a lot harder and training with guys in my squad at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre,\u201d McKeown said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found a new love for the sport (training with <strong>Michael Bohl<\/strong>) and it just goes to show that a happy swimmer is a fast swimmer,. I haven\u2019t necessarily changed anything in my program or training wise. Olympian <strong>Ashley Delaney <\/strong>who broke his own Australian and Australian All-Comers record \u2013 stopping the clock at 24.38 \u2013 to clip 0.06 off his 2022 marks.<\/p>\n<p>In other highlights:<\/p>\n<p><strong>WORLD <\/strong>Championship and Commonwealth Games relay golden girl <strong>Shayna Jack<\/strong> (St Peters Western, QLD) upset Olympic champion <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> (Griffith University, QLD) in the 100m freestyle final \u2013 Jack clocking 53.122, McKeon 53.55 and <strong>Meg Harris<\/strong> 53.91.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KING Kyle<\/strong> <strong>Chalmers<\/strong> attacked the men\u2019s 100m final from the gun and stopped the clock in 48.09 from fellow Commonwealth Games gold medal relay swimmer <strong>William Yang <\/strong>(SOPAC, NSW) 48.64 and young gun <strong>Kai Taylor<\/strong> (St Peters Western, QLD) in his first major podium finish in a personal best time of 48.92, followed by <strong>Flynn Southam<\/strong> (Bond, QLD) 49.08 and <strong>Cam McEvoy <\/strong>(Somerville House, QLD) 49.67.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WORLD <\/strong>champion <strong>Elijah Winnington<\/strong> (St Peters Western, QLD) led from start to finish in an impressive opening swim of the meet to win the men\u2019s 400m freestyle in 3:47.98 (53.11; 1:49.92; 2:49.98).<\/p>\n<p><strong>RIO <\/strong>2016 Olympic champion <strong>Mack Horton<\/strong> (Griffith University, QLD) swam through the field to finish in 3:51.61 edging out <strong>James Koch<\/strong> (Sydney University, NSW) in 3:52.31.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMMONWEALTH GAMES <\/strong>finalist and Mixed Relay gold medallist <strong>Alexandria Perkins <\/strong>(USC Spartans, QLD) scored an impressive victory in the women\u2019s 50m butterfly 26.12 ahead of <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> (Griffith University, QLD) 26.49, with 17-year-old <strong>Isabella Boyd<\/strong> (Nunawading, VIC) third in 26.86.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BIRMINGHAM<\/strong> finalist <strong>Bowen Gough<\/strong> (Griffith University, QLD) hung on to claim an all-the-way victory in the men\u2019s 200m butterfly in 1:58.20 \u2013 just out-touching a fast finishing <strong>Lucas Humeniuk<\/strong> (Chandler, QLD) 1:58.30, with Olympian <strong>Se-Bom Lee<\/strong> (Carlile, NSW) third in 2:00.30, while;<\/p>\n<p><strong>WORLD<\/strong> Championship and Commonwealth Games silver medallist over 200m breaststroke, <strong>Jenna Strauch<\/strong> (Maimi, QLD) scored a comfortable win in the 100m breaststroke from fellow Olympian <strong>Abbey Harkin<\/strong> (St Peters
