It didn\u2019t say much, but said enough to leave them worried.<\/p>\n<p>It was Thursday night, the second day of the four-day Sunshine State Conference Championships in Clearwater. By Monday, the swimmers at the Division II school in Florida would find out if their program would fall victim to budget cuts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe kind of had a bad feeling,\u201d junior <strong>Isabelle Sering<\/strong> said. \u201cIt kind of ruined the mood for us a little, but we didn\u2019t know. They were just saying programs were going to be cut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/saintleolions.com\/news\/2023\/2\/21\/general-saint-leo-university-names-discontinued-athletic-teams.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meetings that Monday, Feb. 21<\/a>, confirmed the swimmers\u2019 fears, that the program, along with men\u2019s and women\u2019s track &amp; field and cross country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/division-ii-saint-leo-university-announces-cut-of-swim-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would be discontinued at the end of the academic year<\/a>. For a handful of resilient swimmers, the NCAA Division II Championships had become as much valedictory as celebratory.<\/p>\n<p>Sering and her teammates will swim this week for the final time in Saint Leo colors, representing a school that has decided to no longer sponsor the sport. It creates some decidedly conflicted emotions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s super sad,\u201d Sering said. \u201cIt\u2019s my third year here, so of course super sad to finish like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sering will swim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-division-ii-qualifiers-announced-drury-tampa-lead-qualifiers-psych-sheets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two individual events at NCAAs<\/a>, the 50 free and 100 fly, where she\u2019s seeded sixth in the latter. It\u2019ll be the third trip to NCAAs in as many years for the native of Trelleborg, Sweden. She medaled in eighth last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/saintleolions.com\/news\/2022\/3\/13\/mens-swimming-saint-leo-brings-home-hardware-from-ncaa-dii-swimming-championships.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one of two medals for the Lions<\/a>, and was 11th as a freshman.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Lucas Minuer<\/strong> qualified in the men\u2019s 50 free. The Lions will send a women\u2019s 200 free relay and men\u2019s 800 free relay to the meet, with men\u2019s and women\u2019s competition held concurrently from March 7-11 at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Considering the cloud over its head, Saint Leo performed admirably at the conference meet. Minuer <a href=\"https:\/\/saintleolions.com\/news\/2023\/2\/16\/womens-swimming-minuer-earns-bronze-during-day-two-of-the-ssc-swimming-championships.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took home bronze<\/a> in the 50 free, as did Sering in the 100 fly. She was fifth in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 free. <strong>Nino Viallon<\/strong> finished fourth in the men\u2019s 100 back and fifth in the 100 fly, and <strong>Vanda Voroshazy<\/strong> was fifth in the 400 IM. Minuer was also sixth in the 200 fly. The Lions finished sixth in the seven-team men\u2019s competition and last among the women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was my first and last one, my last chance to swim with Saint Leo\u2019s in conference,\u201d Minuer, a freshman from France, said. \u201cIt was a pretty bad situation. I\u2019m still lost in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sering seemed relatively sanguine about the situation, recognizing that others have it worse. She indicated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abcactionnews.com\/news\/region-pasco\/saint-leo-student-athletes-share-frustrations-concerns-after-cuts-to-programs-and-sports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the team\u2019s track community has taken the cuts hardest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The cuts affected 25 swimmers, who hail from nine countries beyond the U.S. While Sering, with help from her American roommates, quickly got her head around the peculiarly American predicament, it was more difficult for some, particularly freshmen and transfers new to the program. Sering also expressed gratitude for the way the administration handled it, from face-to-face meetings to aiding athletes who wanted to enter the NCAA transfer portal.<\/p>\n<p>Sering is hoping to find a new college home to finish her studies, and Minuer sounds determined to find another college home in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to stay in the U.S., maybe not in Florida,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s an opportunity to see something new, a new coach, a new college, a new place, a new experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe try to move forward, see this as an opportunity to go forward, test out something new and see how that can help us and see if we can find something we like,\u201d Sering added.<\/p>\n<p>The cuts have added a complicated swirl of emotions to NCAAs. There\u2019s the obvious farewell to their school. But NCAAs also suddenly functions as an audition, a way to showcase their skills to potential new suitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course there\u2019s some extra pressure on us,\u201d Sering said. \u201cWe want to perform extra well knowing that there\u2019s coaches looking out for us, both there but around the country, too. But I\u2019m just going to try to enjoy it as much as possible.
