She was 42 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Cail was a native of Claremont, New Hampshire. She swam at the Bolles School and attended the University of Southern California before transferring to the University of Maine.<\/p>\n<p>In one of her most significant national-team meets, she won gold in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/day-2-1997-pan-pacific-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">800 free relay<\/a> at the 1997 Pan Pacific Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, alongside <strong>Lindsay Benko, Ashley Whitney<\/strong> and <strong>Jenny Thompson.<\/strong> She also finished <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/day-1-1997-pan-pacific-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fourth in the 1,500 freestyle<\/a>. She also won a World Cup circuit event in the 800 free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUSA Swimming is saddened to hear of Jamie Cail\u2019s passing,\u201d said <strong>Lindsay Mintenko<\/strong> (nee Benko), the managing director of the US national swimming team. \u201cJamie was a proud member of our National Teams in the late 1990s and was a cherished teammate. We extend our condolences to Jamie\u2019s friends and family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUniversity of Maine athletics is saddened to learn of the death of former Black Bear swimmer, Jamie Cail,\u201d officials said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/27\/americas\/former-us-swimmer-dies-virgin-islands-spt-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in an emailed statement to CNN<\/a>. \u201cThe University of Maine community asks everyone to keep Jamie\u2019s family and friends in their thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department said that a man identified as Cail\u2019s boyfriend found her on the floor of their home when he returned from a bar. He and a friend transported her to the hospital, where efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.
