Indiana entered the day leading by 106 points before Ohio State&#8217;s <strong>Charlie Clark<\/strong> opened the session with a win in the 1650 freestyle as part of a 1-6-8-9 finish for his team, but Indiana fired back in the next event as <strong>Brendan Burns<\/strong> popped the country&#8217;s fastest time thus far in the 200 backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>While Ohio State earned a second individual win in the 100 freestyle (<strong>Ruslan Gaziev<\/strong>), Indiana then went 2-3-4-5 in the 200 breaststroke behind champion\u00a0<strong>Max McHugh<\/strong> of Minnesota before Burns returned in the 200 butterfly and swam the fastest time in the country in that event as well. Clark, who made his international debut representing the United States at the FINA World Championships last summer, pulled away from Minnesota&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Bar Soloveychik<\/strong>, the eventual runnerup, to win the race in 14:41.75, good for the seventh-fastest time in the country (with the event still to be contested at the Big 12 and Pac-12 Championships). Clark was eighth in this event at last year&#8217;s NCAA Championships, with a sub-14:40 swim required to make the top-10.<\/p>\n<p>Soloveyvich placed second in 14:50.93, while Indiana&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Warren Briggs<\/strong> took third in 14:56.97. Minnesota&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chris Nagy<\/strong> was the only other swimmer to break 15:00, as he placed fourth in 14:57.63, while in the team race, Ohio State cut Indiana&#8217;s lead from 106 Backstroke<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Indiana senior\u00a0<strong>Brendan Burns<\/strong> is attempting the grueling 200 back-200 fly double on the final night in Ann Arbor, and he began the double with a bang as he recorded the nation&#8217;s quickest swim so far in the 200 back. In a wire-to-wire win, Burns pulled away from the field on the third 50 before finishing in 1:38.22. That eclipsed the top time in the country, a mark previously held by Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Destin Lasco<\/strong> set at the Golden Bears&#8217; dual meet against Stanford last week, by one hundredth. In the process, Burns broke the meet record of 1:38.89 established by the Hoosiers&#8217; <strong>Eric Ress<\/strong> nine years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jake Newmark<\/strong> finished second in 1:40.02, while Michigan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Wyatt Davis<\/strong> grabbed third in 1:40.67. Gaziev finished in 41.38, two tenths clear of Mathias&#8217; 41.58, and he broke the meet record of 41.43 set by former Indiana star and two-time U.S. Olympian\u00a0<strong>Blake Pieroni<\/strong> in 2018. Those times rank fourth and sixth, respectively, in the country so far this season.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rafael Miroslaw<\/strong> took third in 42.38, just ahead of the Buckeyes&#8217; <strong>James Ward<\/strong> and Purdue&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brady Samuels<\/strong> (42.41). His final race at a conference championship meet produced another title as he led wire-to-wire on the way to a time of 1:50.20. That time ranks McHugh third in the country this season behind Arizona State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> and Florida&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Aleksas Savickas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As for the team competition, Indiana closed the door on a longshot Ohio State comeback by finishing 2-3-4-5 in this event. The Hooisers&#8217; <strong>Josh Matheny<\/strong> took second in 1:51.23, which ranks 10th in the country, and he was followed by teammates\u00a0<strong>Jassen Yep<\/strong> (1:52.33),\u00a0<strong>Max Reich<\/strong> (1:52.75) and\u00a0<strong>Luke Barr\u00a0<\/strong>(1:54.37).
