﻿{"id":522866,"date":"2023-02-21T09:58:51","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T16:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=522866"},"modified":"2023-02-21T09:58:51","modified_gmt":"2023-02-21T16:58:51","slug":"laureus-world-sport-awards-katie-ledecky-sportswoman-of-the-year-nominee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/laureus-world-sport-awards-katie-ledecky-sportswoman-of-the-year-nominee\/","title":{"rendered":"Laureus World Sport Awards: Katie Ledecky Sportswoman of the Year Nominee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The nominations for the\u00a02023 Laureus World Sport Awards have been announced \u2013 and this year, the world\u2019s pre-eminent sporting Awards ceremony will celebrate not only athletes who thrilled sports fans over the previous 12 months, including swimming superstar <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, but several who will end their careers with a claim to be the greatest in the history of their sport.<\/p>\n<p>With a record 12 Nominations, the U.S. nominees include\u00a0<strong>Steph Curry\u00a0<\/strong>for\u00a0<strong>Laureus World Sportsman of the Year\u00a0<\/strong>for his role in leading the Golden State Warriors to a fourth NBA Championship in eight years, his teammate\u00a0<strong>Klay Thompson,<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0<strong>Laureus World Sports Comeback of the Year<\/strong>\u00a0following a dramatic comeback from injury and rounding out a Laureus first &#8211; three nominees from the same team \u2013 the\u00a0<strong>Golden State Warriors\u00a0<\/strong>for<strong>\u00a0Laureus World Sports Team of the Year<\/strong>.\u00a0 Additional athletes shortlisted for the 2023 awards include swimmer\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, 400 meter hurdler\u00a0<strong>Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone,<\/strong>\u00a0golfing greats\u00a0<strong>Tiger Woods\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Scottie Scheffler,<\/strong>\u00a0Olympic figure skating champion\u00a0<strong>Nathan Chen<\/strong>, World Cup winning skier\u00a0<strong>Mikaela Shiffrin<\/strong>, Olympic snowboarder\u00a0<strong>Chloe Kim\u00a0<\/strong>and Paralympic stars\u00a0<strong>Oksana Masters<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0Declan Farmer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-greatness-of-katie-ledecky-a-statistical-appreciation-of-her-distance-prowess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ledecky<\/a> is a finalist for World Sportswoman of the year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Ledecky\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-building-blocks-of-a-record-medal-haul-unprecedented-five-peat-for-katie-ledecky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> finished off an impressive performance at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest<\/a>, where she swept gold medals in the 400, 800 and 1500 free for the fourth time in her career, and she led the U.S. to gold in the women\u2019s 800 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>She is not the only swimming nominee.\u00a0 New Zealand&#8217;s Paralympic swimmer <strong>Cameron Leslie<\/strong> is a nominee for Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability. He also plays wheelchair rugby.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,400 members of the Laureus Global Nominations Panel decide on all but one category \u2013 the shortlist for the Laureus World Sportsperson with a Disability Award was chosen by a panel from the International Paralympics Committee. What makes the Awards unique is the final stage: a vote by 71 Academy members of the Laureus World Sports Academy made up of athletes who redefined their sport and make up the ultimate jury on sporting greatness. Past U.S. winners have included\u00a0<strong>Tom Brady, Serena Williams, Lindsey Vonn, Missy Franklin, Patrick Mahomes, Kelly Slater, and the Chicago Cubs<\/strong>, as well as many
