Big Ten Women’s Championships, Day 4 Prelims: Amy Fulmer, Josie Panitz Post Top Seeds for First-Place Ohio State<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leading by 85.5 points heading into the final day<\/a> of the Big Ten Women’s Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., the Ohio State Buckeyes are poised for a fourth consecutive team title, particularly after\u00a0Amy Fulmer<\/strong> and\u00a0Katherine Zenick<\/strong> claimed the top two qualifying spots in the 100 freestyle prelims and\u00a0Josie Panitz<\/strong> led the way in the 200 breaststroke. Indiana, in second place in the team race, will have the top time entering the 200 backstroke final with\u00a0Anna Peplowski<\/strong>, and third-place Michigan saw\u00a0Katie Crom<\/strong> go through first in the 200 butterfly.<\/p>\n

Notably, the 200 back went without two-time defending Big Ten champion and 2021 NCAA champion\u00a0Phoebe Bacon<\/strong>. The Wisconsin junior was third in the 100 back Friday night but did not swim Saturday morning, although she won’t need to worry about NCAA Championships qualification with a season-best mark of 1:51.22 already recorded.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Backstroke<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Indiana’s\u00a0Anna Peplowski<\/strong>, who won the 200 free and took second in the 200 back Friday night, will be the top seed for the final after swimming a mark of 1:52.46 in prelims. That put her nine tenths clear of Ohio State’s\u00a0Felicity Pasadyn<\/strong>, who was second in 1:53.39. Although\u00a0Phoebe Bacon<\/strong> skipped prelims, Wisconsin will still have a representative in contention in the final with\u00a0Mack McConagha<\/strong> taking third in 1:53.92.<\/p>\n
Ohio State put three swimmers into the A-final with\u00a0Morgan Kraus<\/strong> (fourth, 1:54.37) and\u00a0Tristan Harrison<\/strong> (sixth, 1:54.91) joining Pasadyn in the top-eight.<\/p>\n

Ohio State went 1-2-3 in the 50 free two days earlier, and a repeat could be in store for the 100 free with all three swimmers earning central lanes for the final.\u00a0Amy Fulmer<\/strong>, who was the runnerup in the splash-and-dash, took first in 47.23, with 50 free winner\u00a0Katherine Zenick<\/strong> just behind with a time of 47.37. Michigan’s\u00a0Lindsay Flynn<\/strong> finished third in 47.87, but the Buckeyes’\u00a0Teresa Ivan<\/strong>, third in the 50, placed fourth in 48.23.<\/p>\n
Indiana’s\u00a0Kristin Paegle<\/strong> and\u00a0Ashley Turak<\/strong> finished fifth and sixth, respectively, while Northwestern’s\u00a0Ashley Strouse<\/strong> and a second Michigan swimmer,\u00a0Christey Liang<\/strong>, rounded out the A-final.<\/p>\n

Ohio State’s\u00a0Josie Panitz<\/strong> placed first by over a second in the 200 breast prelims, recording a time of 2:07.38. She should face a challenge in the final from fifth-year Indiana swimmer\u00a0Noelle Peplowski<\/strong>, who entered with the top time in the Big Ten (and third-best in the country) at 2:05.52 before going 2:08.42 in the morning.<\/p>\n
Michigan’s Letitia Sim<\/strong>, who took third in the 100 breast behind the Ohio State duo of\u00a0Hannah Bach<\/strong> and Panitz, qualified third in 2:09.56, while Wisconsin’s\u00a0Elizabeth Moore\u00a0<\/strong>(2:09.56) also broke 2:10. Bach qualified eighth in 2:11.43.<\/p>\n

Michigan’s\u00a0Katie Crom<\/strong> will go for a title in her home pool in the final individual race of the meet after she qualified first in 1:55.52. Her closest competition in the morning was Ohio State’s\u00a0Felicity Pasadyn<\/strong>, who returned to the pool after qualifying second in the 200 back to post a time of 1:55.68 here. Pasadyn, who won the 400 IM Friday evening, will race a grueling double on the meet’s final night.<\/p>\n
Minnesota’s\u00a0Megan Van Berkom<\/strong>, the runnerup in the 400 IM behind Pasadyn, placed third in prelims in 1:56.27, with Northwestern’s\u00a0Miriam Guevara<\/strong> (1:56.46) and Wisconsin’s Mallory Jump<\/strong> (1:56.49) also swimming under 1:57.<\/p>\n
