Additionally, the University of Virginia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Noah Nichols<\/strong> swam the top-ranked time so far this season in the men&#8217;s 100 breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>The Wolfpack men continued to extend their lead in the team competition over second-place Louisville while the NC State women are now comfortably in second place behind Virginia. The Cavalier women had a quiet night of individual racing, particularly with\u00a0<strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> not racing individually Friday, but\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong> used a late surge to win the 100 breaststroke final.<\/p>\n<p>The night ended with a bang as the Virginia women and NC State men each recorded record-breaking performances in the 400 medley relay, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-women-break-third-relay-record-of-accs-in-400-medley-relay-douglass-splits-48-25-on-butterfly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia breaking a third NCAA record in a relay event this week<\/a> while the Wolfpack knocked off the conference mark.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Team Scores<\/strong><\/h3>\n<pre>Women - Team Rankings - Through Event 30                     \r\n \r\n  1. With reigning NCAA champion\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong> opting out of the 200 fly in favor of the 100 breast later in the evening, the NC State women won an event for the first time this week as junior\u00a0<strong>Abby Arens<\/strong> led wire-to-wire and did not let Louisville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Abby Hay<\/strong> make up any ground on the way home. Arens finished in 1:52.91, which ranks fifth in the country behind a trio of Texas Longhorns (<strong>Emma Sticklen<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kelly Pash<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Dakota Luther<\/strong>) plus Stanford&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Charlotte Hook<\/strong>. That streak was broken in dramatic fashion Friday as\u00a0<strong>Aiden Hayes<\/strong> dominated the 200 fly final and teammate\u00a0<strong>Noah Bowers<\/strong> finished second.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes, who placed 14th in this event at the NCAA Championships last year, produced a time of 1:40.21 to claim the No. 2 spot in the national rankings behind Arizona State&#8217;s <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong>. The time would have been good enough for sixth at the national meet last year, but there is an opportunity for growth in this event with four of the top five finishers from last season either graduated or out for the season with injury.<\/p>\n<p>Bowers took second in 1:41.14, good for seventh nationally, while Virginia&#8217;s <strong>Josh Fong<\/strong> overtook NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Luke Miller<\/strong> and Virginia Tech&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Landon Gentry<\/strong> for third. Ahead by almost nine tenths at the halfway point, Berkoff dropped a time of 49.45, just off her own meet record of 49.41 from last year but well ahead of <strong>Gretchen Walsh&#8217;s<\/strong> 50.07 that previously stood as the national best. Berkoff is the American, U.S. Open and NCAA-record holder in the event at 48.74, a time she swam while edging out Walsh for the NCAA title last season. The NC State senior is undefeated in this event at championship meets in her career, with now four ACC titles and a pair of national championship wins.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Reilly Tiltmann<\/strong> pulled ahead of NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kennedy Noble<\/strong> on the last 50 to take second. Tiltmann posted a time of 51.20, moving herself into the national top-10, while Noble was third in 51.59. Stokowski crushed the field, and he took down the best time in the country as he moved ahead of the 44.77 that\u00a0<strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> swam last month.<\/p>\n<p>However, two more swimmers would swim 45s later in the night: Florida&#8217;s <strong>Adam Chaney<\/strong> surpassed Stokowski for the top mark with a time of 44.18 (and then a 44.17 relay leadoff) while Virginia Tech&#8217;s <strong>Youssef Ramadan<\/strong> led off his team&#8217;s 400 medley relay in 44.59. Also under 45 so far this season are Cal&#8217;s <strong>Destin Lasco<\/strong> (44.88) and Auburn&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nate Stoffle<\/strong> (44.89).<\/p>\n<p>Virginia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Matt Brownstead<\/strong> claimed second in 45.35 to move into the national top-10. She trailed the NC State duo of\u00a0<strong>Heather MacCausland <\/strong>and <strong>Andrea Podmanikova\u00a0<\/strong>at the halfway point, but she pulled even by the final turn before exploding to almost a bodylength lead on the last 25. Walsh touched in 57.64 for her second individual win of the week after previously topping the 200 free Thursday. That broke the conference and meet records of 51.03 which were originally set by Louisville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Evgenii Somov<\/strong> in 2021 before Nichols tied the marks in prelims. The time beat the 51.01 recorded by\u00a0<strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> last month for the top spot in the national rankings. Nichols finished 19th in this event at last year&#8217;s NCAA Championships, but this time would have been good enough for fourth place in the national final.<\/p>\n<p>Petrashov took second in 51.26, good for fourth-best in the national rankings, while NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mason Hunter<\/strong> and Virginia Tech&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Carles Coll Marti<\/strong> tied for third in 51.57, which got both men into the national top-10. The team of\u00a0<strong>Kacper Stokowski<\/strong>, <strong>Mason Hunter<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Nyls Korstanje<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Luke Miller<\/strong> dominated with a time of 3:01.10, which was the fastest time in the country by seven tenths (until Florida blasted a 2:59.48 later in the night at the SEC Championships). The four men broke the previous conference record of 3:01.52 set by Louisville in 2021 as well as the meet record of 3:01.53 the Wolfpack squad of Stokowski, <strong>Rafal Kusto<\/strong>, Korstanje and\u00a0<strong>Noah Henderson<\/strong> set last year.<\/p>\n<p>Stokowski led off in 44.67, just two tenths off his 100 back time from earlier in the night, and Hunter followed with a 50.86 mark. Korstanje went 44.33 on fly before Miller blasted a 41.24 coming home to secure the win. The overall time would have been good enough for third in the event at the NCAA Championships last year.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia&#8217;s team of\u00a0<strong>Jack Aikins<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Noah Nichols<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Tim Connery<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Matt Brownstead<\/strong> finished second in 3:03.29. Nichols, the 100 breast winner earlier in the night, split 51.01 on the second leg before Brownstead came home in 41.35 to overtake Louisville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Abdelrahman El-Araby<\/strong> by eight hundredths at the finish. For the Cardinals,\u00a0<strong>Charlie Crush<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Denis Petrashov<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Dalton Lowe<\/strong> and El-Araby finished third in 3:03.57, with Petrashov out-splitting both Hunter and Nichols with his 50.43 split and El-Araby managing a strong 41.52 effort coming home.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia Tech was in second place for most of the race before Brownstead and El-Araby moved ahead on the anchor leg, but the Hokies managed a time of 3:03.40 for fourth. <strong>Youssef Ramadan<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>AJ Pouch<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mario Molla Yanes<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Luis Dominguez Calonge<\/strong> combined for a time of 3:03.40.
