As she prepares for a rematch with the swimmers who have each won international gold medals in the 100-meter fly, Douglass now owns the quickest time in history in the yards event after she knocked off Mac Neil&#8217;s NCAA and U.S. Open records in the ACC Championships final Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p>In a head-to-head race against Virginia teammate\u00a0<strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gretchen-walsh-breaks-her-first-individual-american-record-in-50-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lowered Douglass&#8217; American, NCAA and U.S. Open records in the 50 freestyle Wednesday night<\/a>, both swimmers went out in 22.86, equal to Douglass&#8217; pace from her American record last March, but Douglass opened up a lead on the second 50 before hitting the wall in 48.84, the fastest time in history by five hundredths. Previously, Mac Neil swam a time of 48.89 at the 2021 NCAA Championships (in a race where Douglass finished second). Douglass also beat her own national mark of 49.04 set last season.<\/p>\n<p>MacNeil won the 100 fly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2023-sec-championships-night-3-baylor-nelson-finishes-im-double\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the SEC Championships later in the night<\/a> \u2013 the meet in College Station, Texas, starting an hour later \u2013 in 48.99. It was an SEC record and gives MacNeil the second and third fastest times in history behind Douglass, though the Canadian looked thoroughly unimpressed by the result.<\/p>\n<p>The record was the fourth NCAA and American record of the meet, with all of the marks set by the Virginia women. Previously, Douglass, Walsh, Walsh&#8217;s older sister\u00a0<strong>Alex<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Lexi Cuomo<\/strong> setting records in\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-opens-acc-championships-with-fastest-time-ever-in-200-medley-relay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">200 medley relay<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday evening and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kate-douglass-gretchen-walsh-lead-virginia-to-another-record-in-200-freestyle-relay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">200 freestyle relay<\/a> Wednesday before the younger Walsh sister achieved the fastest time ever in the 50 free.<\/p>\n<p>Walsh placed second here in 49.34, which made her the sixth-fastest performer in history behind Douglass, Mac Neil, Huske, <strong>Claire Curzan\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Louise Hansson<\/strong>, while Louisville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gabi Albiero<\/strong> notched a third-place time of 50.04, which left her mere hundredths away from becoming the 11th swimmer in history to join the sub-50 club.
