It was also a big night for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as\u00a0<strong>Jack Hoagland<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Chris Guiliano<\/strong> each recorded individual wins. She was the national runnerup in the 400 IM and 200 breaststroke in 2021 before finishing third in the 400 IM and fourth in the 200 breast last season. Already established on the national level in women&#8217;s college swimming, Nelson produced a breakthrough performance Thursday evening as she swam a best time by almost three seconds in a dominant victory.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson trailed Louisville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Abby Hay\u00a0<\/strong>by over a second at the halfway point, but she took over the lead on breaststroke and never looked back. Nelson produced a time of 3:59.33, destroying her previous ACC meet record and lifetime best of 4:02.11, and she became the 11th-fastest performer in history in the event.\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong>, a teammate of Nelson&#8217;s at Virginia, is the only other active college swimmer to break 4:00 in her career.<\/p>\n<p>NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Grace Sheble<\/strong> also closed well as she finished second in 4:04.98, while Hay claimed third in 4:05.23. Those swimmers rank fifth and sixth nationally, respectively. Hoagland swam a time of 3:41.15 as he held off Virginia Tech&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nico Garcia<\/strong> and charging NC State swimmer\u00a0<strong>Owen Lloyd<\/strong> at the finish. Hoagland moved into the national top-10 with his performance while Garcia placed second in 3:41.63 and Lloyd took third in 3:42.16. Ramadan opened up a significant lead by the halfway point with a 20.08 split, and an impressive trio of NC State swimmers could not get any closer down the stretch. Ramadan touched in 43.93, just off his conference record of 43.90 set in a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships last year. His time is the fastest in the country this season, beating the 44.04 that\u00a0<strong>Jordan Crooks<\/strong> recorded in the 100 fly prelims at the SEC Championships, although Crooks is likely to swim even quicker in the final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aiden Hayes<\/strong> of the Wolfpack placed second in 44.66, just ahead of teammate\u00a0<strong>Nyls Korstanje<\/strong> at 44.70. She is the defending national champion in both individual medley events, but she skipped those to focus on the 200 freestyle, and she recorded the country&#8217;s top time in a wire-to-wire win.\u00a0<strong>Aimee Canny<\/strong>, a new addition to the Virginia roster hailing from South Africa, stayed close to Walsh for the first 100 yards of the event, but Walsh showed her endurance in pulling away to a time of 1:41.63.<\/p>\n<p>That time crushed the previous national best of 1:42.78 set last month by Texas&#8217; <strong>Kelly Pash<\/strong>, and it would have ranked third at last season&#8217;s national meet. Walsh beat her winning time from last year&#8217;s conference meet (1:42.28), and she came up just short of\u00a0<strong>Mallory Comerford&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>ACC meet record of 1:41.60.<\/p>\n<p>Canny finished second in 1:42.62, moving ahead of Pash for No. 2 in the country behind Walsh, while Virginia Tech&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emma Atkinson<\/strong> placed third in 1:43.31, which will rank her sixth in the country. Guiliano finished in 1:32.43, while Unlu and NC State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Bartosz Piszczorowicz<\/strong> tied for second in 1:32.47.
