In the opening relay, the country&#8217;s dominant women&#8217;s program set its second American and NCAA record of the meet with Virginia&#8217;s team of <strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lexi Cuomo<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh\u00a0<\/strong>lowering their own mark, and on the men&#8217;s side, NC State continued piling up relay victories.<\/p>\n<p>In the individual races, the Virginia women and NC State men continued their winning ways. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kate-douglass-blasts-second-fastest-200-im-in-history-misses-american-record-by-seven-hundredths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Douglass finished in the second-fastest time in history in the 200 IM<\/a> while her Cavaliers teammate <strong>Ella Nelson<\/strong> tied with Georgia Tech&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Deniz Ertan<\/strong> in the 500 free, and on the men&#8217;s side, the Wolfpack&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>James Plage\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Arsenio Bustos<\/strong> claimed wins. Notre Dame&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chris Guiliano<\/strong> posted the top leadoff split at 18.95, but the Wolfpack squad was right behind with\u00a0<strong>David Curtiss<\/strong> going out in 18.99, and <strong>Noah Henderson<\/strong> quickly took over the lead.\u00a0<strong>Luke Miller<\/strong> extended the margin before\u00a0<strong>Nyls Korstanje<\/strong> finished in 18.55, the fastest split in the field. NC State came in at 1:15.10, moving ahead of Arizona State (1:15.30) for the country&#8217;s top time, at least for the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia finished second in 1:15.89 with the team of\u00a0<strong>Matt Brownstead<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jack Aikins<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Tim Connery<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>August Lamb<\/strong>. The Cavaliers set the American record in this event at last season&#8217;s ACC Championships (1:14.47), and Brownstead and Lamb both returned from that squad while UVA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Matt King<\/strong> is absent this week in Greensboro. Nelson, better known for her skills in breaststroke and individual medley races, held tough on the last two lengths, but Ertan bounced back with a 26.90 freestyle split.<\/p>\n<p>The two swimmers came to the wall at the exact same time, and they ended up finishing in a dead-heat, both touching at 4:38.04. Ertan and Nelson are now tied for second in the country behind Texas&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Erica Sullivan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With the first individual swimming event concluded, the Cavaliers moved into the team lead with Nelson tying for first place and then\u00a0<strong>Maddie Donohoe<\/strong> claiming third in 4:39.59. Plage, a consolation finalist in this event at last year&#8217;s NCAA Championships, took the lead for the first time at the 450-yard mark, flipping one hundredth ahead of Unlu, and he held firm over the final two lengths to earn the win in 4:12.33, just ahead of Unlu&#8217;s 4:12.35.<\/p>\n<p>Finishing third was Florida State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yordan Yanchev<\/strong> placed third in 4:12.97. Yanchev held the lead for most of the race, but he could not keep pace with Plage and Unlu at the finish. The trio moved to fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the national rankings. Bustos was in third place with 50 yards to go, but he finished in 24.58 to pull away from his rivals and score the win in 1:40.31, quicker than Coll Marti&#8217;s 1:40.45 from last season. The time also ranks second in the country so far this season behind the insane 1:38.89 that Arizona State&#8217;s <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> posted last month.<\/p>\n<p>Coll Marti finished second in 1:41.02, with Izzo touching just behind in 1:41.13. Those times rank third and fourth, respectively, in the nation.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Men&#8217;s 50 Freestyle<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The last swimming race of the night was the first not to feature an NC State winner. Instead, it was Louisville&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Abdelrahman El-Araby<\/strong> touching out Virginia Tech&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Youssef Ramadan<\/strong> by three hundredths, 18.79 to 18.82.
