{"id":522207,"date":"2023-02-09T04:13:22","date_gmt":"2023-02-09T11:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=522207"},"modified":"2023-02-09T04:26:43","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T11:26:43","slug":"singapore-replaces-kazan-as-host-of-2025-world-aquatics-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/singapore-replaces-kazan-as-host-of-2025-world-aquatics-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Singapore Replaces Kazan As Host Of 2025 World Aquatics Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>World Aquatics<\/strong> has announced Singapore will play host to the<strong> 2025<\/strong> <strong>World Aquatics Championships,\u00a0<\/strong>and will replace Kazan.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian city <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-headed-to-kazan-for-2025-and-budapest-in-2027\/\">was awarded the showpiece event<\/a> in July 2019 and were due to stage the meet 10 years after they played host in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>However, the invasion of Ukraine and ongoing war saw athletes from Russia and Belarus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-excludes-russian-and-belarussian-athletes-and-officials-from-2022-world-championships\/\">excluded from the 2022 worlds in Budapest<\/a>, after which the Russian federation withdrew its swimmers from competitions run by World Aquatics then known as FINA.<\/p>\n<p>The city, in the <strong>Republic of Tatarstan<\/strong>, had been due to host short-course worlds in December last year which was withdrawn and subsequently awarded to Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>Now Singapore will become the first South-East Asian city to host the worlds, one year after the <strong>Paris Olympics<\/strong> making it three World Championships in the space of two years following on from Fukuoka in July 2023 and Doha in February 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Dates have not yet been confirmed with the event being staged in close cooperation with the Singapore Swimming Association and Sport Singapore, a statutory board under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorld Aquatics could not be happier to know that the hosting of our main event for 2025 is in such good hands, thanks to the team here in Singapore,\u201d said<strong> President Husain Al-Musallam<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSingapore has everything we hope to share with our athletes: world-class facilities, proven experience of hosting events of the highest quality and a comprehensive approach to aquatic sports that runs from elite level to the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With a back-to-back-to-back trio of World Aquatics Championships in Asia \u2013 following Fukuoka this year and Doha in 2024 \u2013 the continent is demonstrating exceptional commitment and ability when it comes to welcoming the world\u2019s best aquatic athletes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">To Singapore, we go! \u270c\ufe0f \ud83c\uddf8\ud83c\uddec <\/p>\n<p>World Aquatics Championships 2025 will take place in Singapore \ud83e\udd29<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SG_Swimming?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SG_Swimming<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SportSingapore?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SportSingapore<\/a> | ActiveSG Circle <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7qhk8Dsjlh\">pic.twitter.com\/7qhk8Dsjlh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; World Aquatics (@WorldAquatics) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WorldAquatics\/status\/1623596059434811397?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 9, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Singapore has been a regular stop on the World Cup tour and hosted the World Junior Championships in 2015 featuring the likes of <strong>Kyle Chalmers<\/strong>, <strong>Penny Oleksiak<\/strong> and <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you might expect from an island nation, Singapore has a proud tradition of aquatic sports.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our whole community is excited about the opportunities that will come from bringing the world\u2019s best aquatics athletes to Singapore: from the teams that have represented us with honour at the Olympic Games and the World Aquatics Championships to the young people training in our clubs,\u201d said <strong>Singapore Swimming Association President Mark Chay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Competition venues include the <strong>Singapore Sports Hub<\/strong>, a world-class complex that includes the National Stadium, the Singapore Indoor Stadium and the OCBC Aquatic Centre. The OCBC Aquatic Centre features two 50m pools and a diving facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sport Singapore<\/strong> Chief Executive Officer <strong>Lim Teck Yin<\/strong> said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAs a global blue-ribbon event, the World Aquatics Championships 2025 is an exciting boost for Singapore aquatics. It will not only benefit sport in Singapore, but also activate the athletes, fans and the industry in Southeast Asia through engagement opportunities leading up to the event and the championships themselves.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will certainly be looking to the industry for innovative tech solutions for event operations and fan engagement in particular.
