SEVENTEEN year-old Michael Phelps won his second gold medal in an “off” event on this, the third night of competition at the ConocoPhillips USA National Swimming Championships it the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, as US Olympians swept all four individual races.

Last night Phelps, who holds the world record in the 200m fly and 400m medley, proved he is a formidable 200 meter backstroke swimmer when he stormed from behind on the final lap to beat 2000 Olympic champion, Lenny Krayzelburg. Tonight, flipped over onto his stomach, he out-sprinted 2000 Olympian Klete Keller to take the 200 meter freestyle, 1:47.37 to 1:47.74, with another Olympian, Scott Goldblatt, third. Keller is known for his final lap sprint heroics.

The time ranks Phelps fourth all-time among Americans in the 200m freestyle, but it still leaves him more than three seconds behind Australian Ian Thorpe’s global standard of 1:44.06.

Phelps, unimpressed with his effort, was already thinking of how to improve his race.
“I think I misjudged the race,” he said. “I was expecting those guys to go out a little faster, and I definitely swam their race and not my own. Tonight was a learning experience. I definitely got a lot out of it.”

Lindsay Benko, an Indiana native who swims for the Trojan Swim Club in California, avenged her defeat last night in the 100m freestyle at the hands of 16 year-old Rhi Jeffrey, but reversing that decision at twice the distance. Benko led the entire way to touch first in 2:00.58, while Jeffrey climbed all the way from sixth with 50 meters to go to place in the number two spot at 2:01.10.

“The 200 free has always been my favorite event, and I always want to win that one,” Benko said. “I was actually out slower than I wanted to be out. Hopefully I’ll be a little faster Sunday. It’s always nice to win a national championship.”

In the men’s 400 meter individual medley, Tom Wilkens out-dueled Canada’s Brian Johns, pulling away at the 250-metre mark for the victory in 4:16.75. Johns, who last month set a world record in the short course version of this event, followed in 4:18.21.

“I was pretty excited with tonight’s swim,” said Wilkens, an Olympic bronze medalist in the 200 IM after he snagged his sixteenth national title. “I have been making some changes to my technique, and I think tonight helped me out. I’m pretty pleased with my progress.”

Comebacking Kaitlin Sandeno, a 2000 Olympian in the 400m medley, also made progress, winning the women’s race in 4:45.48, using precisely the same strategy employed by Wilkens: sprinting ahead of Sara McLarty on the second 50 meters of the breaststroke leg, and then holding on. McLarty was second in 4:46.71 while 18 year-old high school senior, Adrienne Binder, followed closely behind at 4:47.02.

Afterwards, Sandeno, who won the 200m butterfly last night, commented: “I have never really been one to have confidence problems, but I noticed at NCAAs that I was doubting myself. I think my performance in last night’s 200 fly and my performance tonight have raised my confidence level.”

SMU took the women's 400m free relay in 3:48.86 while Circle C won the men's event in a very swift 3:20.03.

ConocoPhillips USA National Swimming Championship
4/1/2003 to 4/5/2003
50 meter pool

RESULTS

DAY THREE: April 3, 2003

Event 11 Women 200 LC Meter Freestyle
World: 1:56.64 W 8/3/2002 Franziska van Almsick, GER
American: 1:57.90 A 7/27/1992 Nicole Haislett, USA
U.S. Open: 1:58.02 O 7/15/2000 Claudia Poll, CRC
LC Nationals: 1:58.20 M 8/14/2002 Natalie A Coughlin CALIFORNIA AQ.
Oly.
