{"id":521955,"date":"2023-02-02T05:40:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-02T12:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=521955"},"modified":"2023-02-02T05:40:00","modified_gmt":"2023-02-02T12:40:00","slug":"bob-bowman-on-arizona-states-techsuit-swims-its-a-learning-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/bob-bowman-on-arizona-states-techsuit-swims-its-a-learning-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Bob Bowman on Arizona State\u2019s Techsuit Swims: It\u2019s a Learning Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bob Bowman on Arizona State\u2019s Techsuit Swims: It\u2019s a Learning Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Arizona State turned heads <a href=\"https:\/\/thesundevils.com\/news\/2023\/1\/21\/mens-swimming-diving-sun-devils-bombard-no-2-11-california-with-record-setting-clean-sweep.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nearly two weeks ago<\/a>, blitzing the NCAA leaderboard \u2013 not to mention Stanford and California \u2013 in dual meets. It came with the Sun Devils, the men\u2019s team already ranked No. 1 in the nation, wearing techsuits.<\/p>\n<p>The reason, to coach <strong>Bob Bowman<\/strong>, was simple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you\u2019ll see a lot more people doing that because, No. 1, it\u2019s a lot more fun. And No. 2, I just think it\u2019ll make the sport better,\u201d Bowman said on a Zoom call with media Wednesday. \u201cI think the days of people trying to be as slow and tired as they can be all season and then have some miraculous thing at the end are over. It just doesn\u2019t make sense to me, and I hope it doesn\u2019t make sense to everybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not they were miraculous, Arizona State\u2019s swims <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/arizona-state-makes-a-statement-with-sweep-of-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">against Cal were historically fast<\/a>. By the end of the weekend, <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> held an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/leon-marchand-destroys-ncaa-record-in-400-im-in-arizona-state-dual-meet-against-cal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCAA record in the 400 individual medley<\/a> among NCAA-leading times in four events. <strong>Grant House<\/strong> lowered his nation-best time in the 200 free. A slew of others set themselves up as potential NCAA finalists.<\/p>\n<p>And much of that was because Bowman opted not to keep the Sun Devils\u2019 powder dry for NCAAs.<\/p>\n<p>The team didn\u2019t rest for the meet \u2013 also on the call, Marchand alluded to one light day before the back-to-back meets against Northern California foes. So what transpired at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center was all about the suits amplifying the works swimmers had put in for months.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s the point for Bowman. (It&#8217;s not a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/arizona-state-coach-bob-bowman-addresses-tech-suits-in-dual-meet-competition-opportunity-for-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new perspective from him, either<\/a>.) He\u2019s quite clear that hard work throughout the year is \u201cthe primary ingredient,\u201d as he hopes to bring Arizona State from sixth at NCAAs last year, its best finish in four decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/can-arizona-state-men-contend-for-national-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to contend for a title<\/a>. But when you\u2019re shaving, tapering and suiting up for championship season, it\u2019s hard to tease out how much each element helps.<\/p>\n<p>Wearing the techsuits early not only gets swimmers used to them, but it gives the coaching staff valuable intel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe decided to wear the tech suits because, No. 1, why don\u2019t we want to go fast in meets?,\u201d Bowman said. \u201cWhy do we impose slowness on ourselves when we don\u2019t have to? We\u2019d like to learn how to swim in the techsuits, and these meets are really the only time to learn how to do that, except for a couple of practices where we use them. We wanted to be able to do that under racing conditions. And No. 2, we also want to learn about our training plan. And if you\u2019re going to go through your whole season without using the techsuits for the most part and then at the end, you\u2019re going to add a techsuit, and shave and taper the training, there\u2019s three variables you just changed and you don\u2019t know which one made the difference or how much of a difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we\u2019re taking one out of the equation.
