﻿{"id":521821,"date":"2023-01-28T16:53:23","date_gmt":"2023-01-28T23:53:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=521821"},"modified":"2023-01-28T16:54:22","modified_gmt":"2023-01-28T23:54:22","slug":"west-virginia-wins-28-of-32-events-in-sweep-of-villanova","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/west-virginia-wins-28-of-32-events-in-sweep-of-villanova\/","title":{"rendered":"West Virginia Wins 28 of 32 Events in Sweep of Villanova"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>West Virginia Wins 28 of 32 Events in Sweep of Villanova<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The West Virginia Mountaineers hosted Villanova Saturday in Morgantown and tallied a pair of victories, with the women winning 194-100 and the men dominating 207.5-83.5.<\/p>\n<p>West Virginia&#8217;s women had three double winners on the day: <strong>Jaqueline McCutchan<\/strong> in the 100 backstroke (56.40) and 100 freestyle (51.32),\u00a0<strong>Mia Cheatwood<\/strong> in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.36) and 200 breaststroke and\u00a0<strong>Olivia Busch<\/strong> in the 1000 free (10:26.08) and 500 free (5:05.68).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>College swimming news<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the men&#8217;s side,\u00a0<strong>Danny Berlitz<\/strong> won the 100 backstroke (48.86) an 200 IM (1:47.92) while\u00a0<strong>William Mullen<\/strong> also won two races, in the 1000 free (9:26.52) and the 500 free (4:35.43).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/sidearm.nextgen.sites\/wvuni.sidearmsports.com\/documents\/2023\/1\/28\/villnova_vs_wvu_results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Full results are available here<\/a>, and read the full press release from West Virginia below:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The West Virginia University men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming and diving teams tallied a pair of wins over Villanova on Senior Day at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s team was victorious over the Wildcats, earning a score of 207.5-83.5, while the women earned a score of 194-100.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Always a special day to honor our seniors. To send them off with wins was great,&#8221; coach <strong>Vic Riggs<\/strong> said. &#8220;Very strong effort from both teams today. Pleased with the overall racing and adjustments we&#8217;ve made from the first two meets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The afternoon was highlighted by the Mountaineers winning 28 of the 32 meet events.<\/p>\n<p>The first win of the day came in the women&#8217;s 400-yard medley relay. Senior <strong>Jacqueline<\/strong> <strong>McCutchan<\/strong>, freshman <strong>Mia<\/strong> <strong>Cheatwood<\/strong>, senior <strong>Harna Minezawa<\/strong> and freshman <strong>Ada Szwabinska<\/strong> finished with a time of 3:48.36. The 200-yard free relay team consisting of the same four also earned first place, finishing in 1:33.75.<\/p>\n<p>The women were led by McCutchan, Cheatwood, and freshman <strong>Olivia Busch<\/strong> who added two solo victories for the Mountaineers. McCutchan earned first in the 100-yard backstroke (56.40) and 100 free (51.32). Cheatwood&#8217;s victories came in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.36) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.64). Busch finished first in the 1000 free (10:26.08) and 500 free, touching the pads in 5:05.68.<\/p>\n<p>Minezawa, Szwabinska, junior <strong>Abby<\/strong> <strong>Reardon<\/strong>, sophomore <strong>Emily<\/strong> <strong>Knorr<\/strong>, senior <strong>Ginger<\/strong> <strong>Hansen<\/strong>, junior <strong>Paige<\/strong> <strong>Dressel<\/strong>\u00a0and sophomore <strong>Morgan Burton<\/strong> also added victories for West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#8217;s side, the 400-yard medley relay team consisting of junior <strong>Justin<\/strong> <strong>Heimes<\/strong>, junior <strong>Danny<\/strong> <strong>Berlitz<\/strong>, senior <strong>David<\/strong> <strong>Snider<\/strong>\u00a0and sophomore <strong>Conner McBeth<\/strong> earned first, finishing with a time of 3:17.11. The 200-yard free relay also secured first place. McBeth, freshman <strong>Jamin<\/strong> <strong>Harlan<\/strong>, senior <strong>Roberts<\/strong> <strong>Zemturis<\/strong>\u00a0and freshman <strong>Maverick Bray<\/strong> finished with a time of 1:24.19.<\/p>\n<p>Berlitz added a pair of solo victories for the men in the 100-yard backstroke (48.86) and the 200-yard IM (1:47.92). Junior <strong>William Mullen<\/strong> also added two solo victories in the 1000 free (9:26.52) and the 500 free (4:35.43).<\/p>\n<p>McBeth, Heimes, Harlan, freshman <strong>Max<\/strong> <strong>Nielson<\/strong>, sophomore <strong>Reilly<\/strong> <strong>Kennedy<\/strong>, freshman <strong>Alvaro<\/strong> <strong>Santiago<\/strong>, junior <strong>Roanoke<\/strong> <strong>Shirk<\/strong>, freshman <strong>Adam McDonald<\/strong>\u00a0and senior <strong>David Snider<\/strong> added solo victories for the men as well.<\/p>\n<p>In the diving well, senior <strong>Owen Johns<\/strong> finished first in the 1-meter (328.95) and 3-meter (378.90).
