ED Moses challenged the world record in the 200 meter breaststroke and Michael Phelps upset Olympic champion Lenny Krayzelburg in the 200 meter backstroke to highlight the second day of competition at the ConocoPhillips USA Spring National Swimming Championships held at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.

At the 100-meter mark, Moses turned in 1:01.96, well ahead of world record pace in the breaststroke. He was still ahead at the final turn, but despite the deafening cheers of the crowd, he faded a bit down the home stretch and finished a second and a quarter shy of the world record of 2:09.97, set by Japan’s Kosuke Kitajima last October in Busan, South Korea. Moses’ 2:11.22 – his best performance in two years — gave him his ninth national title, and is the world’s fastest time this year.

“One thing I pride myself on is that every time I’m out there, everyone expects a record out of me,” Moses said. “That’s a pretty high standard to live up to, but that’s my job and I love it.”

“When I hit the 150 mark, the crowd was the loudest I’ve ever heard,” he said. “It kind of took me out of my league tonight, but it was fun. I’ve never walked away smiling from something that hurt so bad.”

In a stunning upset, 17 year-old Michael Phelps, the world record-holder in the 200 meter butterfly and 400 meter individual medley, proved he’s a pretty potent dorsal swimmer as well. The teen phenom stroked to a 1:57.04 clocking in the 200 meter backstroke, as he out-dueled 2000 Olympic champion and former world record-holder Lenny Krayzelburg, who touched at 1:57.46. Phelps’ time makes him the fourth fastest 200 meter backstroker in history.

Phelps took a solid lead through the first 100 meters, but Krayzelburg came storming back on the third 50 to turn first with one lap to go. Then Phelps uncorked his sprint to overtake Krayzelburg, 10 years his senior, and drive home for the win.

Phelps paid homage to Krayzelburg, who is gradually rounding back into shape after shoulder surgery late last year: “Lenny is an unbelievable 200 backstroker, and I definitely knew it would come down to a race like that,” Phelps said. “I was just so happy to get my hand on the wall first.”

In a battle of 2000 Olympic sprinters, Scott Tucker took the 100m freestyle in 49.43 seconds, just ahead of Sydney teammates Neil Walker (49.49) and Jason Lezak (49.64).

In Phelps’ absence, Japan’s Takashi Yamamoto took the 200m fly in 1:58.18, edging Virginia’s Michael Raab (1:58.56).

Yamamoto was one of four foreigners walking off with US titles tonight. In fact, three of the four women’s crowns contested this evening were won by foreign athletes.

Britain’s Georgina Lee won the women’s 200 meter butterfly in an outstanding 2:09.48, qualifying her for the British World Championship team.

The women’s 200 meter breaststroke was a replay of the 2000 Olympic Games and 2001 World Championships – though a few seconds slower — with Hungary’s Agnes Kovacs touching home in 2:29.48, just ahead of the USA’s Kristy Kowal (2:29.69).

Canada’s Jennifer Fratesi was the surprise winner of the 200 meter backstroke, taking her first US title in 2:12.52.

Sixteen year-old Rhi Jeffrey was the only American woman to win gold tonight, storming back from seventh place at the turn to earn her first national title as she beat veteran Lindsay Benko to the wall in the 100m freestyle, 55.21 to 55.37. Not one to hide her emotions, Jeffrey said: “I was so happy.
