{"id":521665,"date":"2023-01-25T21:14:43","date_gmt":"2023-01-26T04:14:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=521665"},"modified":"2023-01-25T21:14:43","modified_gmt":"2023-01-26T04:14:43","slug":"david-curtiss-gretchen-walsh-garner-acc-swimmer-of-the-week-nods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/david-curtiss-gretchen-walsh-garner-acc-swimmer-of-the-week-nods\/","title":{"rendered":"David Curtiss, Gretchen Walsh Garner ACC Swimmer of the Week Nods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>David Curtiss, Gretchen Walsh Garner ACC Swimmer of the Week Nods<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NC State\u2019s <strong>David Curtiss<\/strong> and <strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> of Virginia earned ACC Swimmer of the Week honors, <a href=\"https:\/\/theacc.com\/news\/2023\/1\/24\/athlete-awards-acc-names-swimming-diving-performers-of-the-week.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released by the conference on Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Curtiss\u2019s teammate <strong>Bayne Bennett<\/strong> shared the men\u2019s diver of the week honor with North Carolina\u2019s <strong>Anton Down-Jenkins.<\/strong> UNC also picked up the women\u2019s diver of the week via <strong>Aranza Vazquez.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/acc-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACC Swimming<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Curtiss earned his first ACC weekly honor. The sophomore sprinter won the 50 freestyle in 19.28 seconds over the weekend, as the Wolfpack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-women-nc-state-men-dominate-day-two-of-top-flight-acc-clash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">topped Virginia and UNC in a tri-meet<\/a>. Curtiss\u2019s time is the fastest in the conference this season. He also won the 100 free, lead off NC State\u2019s A cut 200 free relay with a 19.33 and anchored the winning 200 medley relay.<\/p>\n<p>Walsh tallied six A cut times for the top-ranked Cavaliers. Her time of 50.07 in the 100 backstroke off the front of the winning 400 medley relay was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/gretchen-walsh-swims-nations-fastest-100-backstroke-as-virginia-women-nc-state-men-dominate-day-one-of-acc-tri-meet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the fastest time in the nation this season<\/a>. The sophomore also won the 50 free and was on winning 200 free, 200 medley and 400 free relays for Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett posted the best score in the ACC this season on 1-meter at 368.70 in the meet with Virginia and North Carolina. The senior also set a personal best with 372.25 points on 3-meter, the fourth-best score in the conference this season.<\/p>\n<p>Down-Jenkins is the diver of the week for the second time this season. The New Zealand native set the best score in the NCAA this season 3-meter with 461.05 points. That set the UNC record by 11 points, improving his record. He also finished second on 1-meter at 360.35.<\/p>\n<p>Vazquez is the ACC diver of the week for the fourth time this season. The senior from Mexico swept both diving events in the tri-meet. Like Down-Jenkins, she set a UNC program record on 3-meter with an NCAA-leading score of 409.60. She\u2019s the only diver to crack the 400-point mark in the event this season.
