THE Dutch capital of Amsterdam was the site this weekend of a renewed initiative to give the Netherlands a top international swim meet.

With top performances by Britain’s Mark Foster and Zoe Baker and Dutch stars Pieter van den Hoogenband, Marleen Veldhuis and Chantal Groot, the Amsterdam Swim Cup 2003 has entered the history books as Holland’s greatest meet in the last decade.

Mark Foster just missed his personal best in the 50 free, clocking 22.40 for one length. Dutch freestyler Johan Kenkhuis of the organising Top Swimming Amsterdam, also finished under 23 seconds (22.99).

Olympic Champion Pieter van den Hoogenband had no problem winning the 100 in 49.37, but didn’t match Ian Thorpe’s time of last week. Nevertheless he’s confident he's on target for the Worlds, also for the relays.

“During a recent National training camp in Flagstaff, we also trained on relay starts. With the great sprinters we have, the goal of the relays is to medal in Barcelona and Athens.“ Those starts have cost the Netherlands several medal chances at major competitions, including at the Olympics.

VDH didn’t participate in the 200, leaving gold for Spain’s Olaf Wildeboer. His team, Sabadell, swept almost all distance events. Jorge Sanches finished first in 2:00.88 in the 200 back, while Fernanado del Villar won the 200 IM (2:06.49), just ahead of Dutch Robin van Aggele (2:06.57).

Van Aggele did win the 400 IM (4:30.35). Javier Nunez won both the 400 free (3:59.27) and the 200 fly (2:03.86), showing the Dutch swimmers there’s more than just sprinting.

Iceland’s Jakob Johann Sveinsson crowned himself the breaststroke king of the meet, winning the 50 (29.71), 100 (1:03.58) and 200 breast.(2:17.49), showing his coach Stu Stuart that he is capable of winning in preparation for Barcelona.

The 50 fly showed a great battle between Mark Foster and Joris Keizer. The Brit won by a fingertip length (23.96 to 23.98). Ewout Holst finished half a second behind, but his 24.47 was still a great performance. Keizer did win the 100 fly (53.16).

Gold medalist in the 200 back Jorge Sanches, also won the 100 backstroke (56.61), but Dutch sprinter Bastiaan Tamminga was too fast for him in the 50 (26.58).

On the women’s side we saw some great clashes between Marleen Veldhuis and Chantal Groot. The 100 free was one of the finest of the weekend. Turning almost at the same time, the two women speeded to the finish. Veldhuis touched the pad first in 55.52, leaving Groot in second place (55.88). Both women were adrenalined by the presence of Therese Alshammer, but she couldn’t beat the Dutch. Other contesters for the World Championships freestyle relay are Manon van Rooijen (56.32), Inge Dekker (56.60) and Annabel Kosten (56.97).

Veldhuis: “This time means qualification for Barcelona. If I want to make the finals there, I have to be about a second faster, but that’s a nice goal.” This is well possible seen the progression she made the last year, coming out of nowhere.

On the 50 free, Veldhuis gathered her second gold in a blistering 25.54, half a second ahead of Alshammer (26.12) and Kosten (26.13).

In the butterfly sprints, these women also had strong appearances. Sprint specialist Inge Dekker took the gold on the 50 (27.36), just ahead of Veldhuis and Groot, but even with a very strong finish, she couldn’t prevent Groot grabbing her first gold. Both women are approaching the 1 minute barrier, clocking 1:00.14 for Groot and 1:00.52 for Dekker.

In the 200 freestyle, Haike van Stralen won easily, touching in 2:03 flat. Van Stralen also took gold in the 400 (4:22.08).

They were not as dominating as the men from Sabadell, but the women from Spain did manage to collect some golden medals. Elisenda Perez was much too strong for the rest of the field in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:20.34. Elisabet Homet did the same in the 200 fly (2:17.80), the only competition she got was from her teammate Nuria Garcia (2:20.52). Both women also placed first and second in the 400 IM, in times of 4:58.99 for Perez and 5:01.20 for Garcia.

Hinkelien Schreuder of the Philips pro swim team won both the 50 (29.35) and 100 backstroke (1:03.75), but had to leave the 200 to Rieneke Schinkel (2:18.23).

Winners of the breaststroke were Paula Boot: 100 (1:13.74) and Melanie ten Brink: 200 (2:37.66).

Top women’s performer was Zoe Baker, who swam 31.47 for the 50 breaststroke. At the British trials last week, she qualified for Barcelona in this event. Her goal for the World Championships is to sharpen her world mark, “I believe women can break the 30 seconds barrier in this event, I want to be the first one to succeed. This is the only event for me this year. Next season I’ll be going to focus more on the 100 for the Olympics.”

Besides top swimming performances, this Amsterdam Swim Cup was highlighted by several clinics for age group and disabled swimmers, in cooperation with Olympic coaches like Titus Mennen and Mark Faber and swimmers such as Van den Hoogenband and Benno Kuipers.

This meet was also the big finale for the 16 Israeli and Palestinian coaches who were invited to The Netherlands by the Dutch Swimming Federation and enthusiastic politicians. The organising Peres Center for Peace believes ‘sports can build bridges’ and had set up a seminar where these coaches worked together to gain knowledge in coaching swimming.

The concept of this meet is unique in the country, and the organising Top Swimming Amsterdam wishes to continue this level in the coming year. Talks are already underway to plan this event in the pre-Olympic preparation as a major international test case.

Amsterdam Swim Cup 2003
Date :30-03-2003
Pool: Sloterparkbad
