{"id":520671,"date":"2023-01-04T18:42:27","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T01:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=520671"},"modified":"2023-01-04T18:42:27","modified_gmt":"2023-01-05T01:42:27","slug":"auburn-sweeps-texas-am-in-sec-showdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/auburn-sweeps-texas-am-in-sec-showdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Auburn Sweeps Texas A&#038;M in SEC Showdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Auburn men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming and diving teams swept Texas A&amp;M on Wednesday in the first meet of the new year for both teams.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#8217;s meet, No. 9 Auburn defeated the No. 8 Aggies 167.5-132.5.<\/p>\n<p>Aubrun won the 200 medley relay with <strong>Aidan Stoffle, Reid Mikuta, Nate Stoffle<\/strong> and <strong>Kalle Makinen<\/strong> touching the wall in 1:26.77.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Christian Sztolcman, Ryan Husband<\/strong> and <strong>Mikkel Gadgaard<\/strong> made sure to pile up the points in the 200 free. The trio hit the wall second, third and fourth. Sztolcman returned to winning form in the 100 (44.16).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aidan Stoffle<\/strong> (46.98), <strong>Nate Stoffle<\/strong> (47.51) and<strong> Lleyton Smith<\/strong> (48.83) flew to the final wall for a sweep on the men&#8217;s side in the 100 back.<\/p>\n<p>The Stoffles were on display again in 100 fly. Aidan picked up his second win of the day (47.87) while Nate took second (48.05) for Auburn.<\/p>\n<p>Mikuta hit the wall almost a second ahead of the closest swimmer, finishing in 53.96.<\/p>\n<p>Transfer<strong> Mihalis Deliyiannis<\/strong> won the 50 free, touching in at 20.16, just one-tenth ahead of <strong>Kalle Makinen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A nearly perfect day in the pool culminated in Auburn&#8217;s most resounding win of the afternoon. <strong>Aidan Stoffle, Kalle Makinen, Ryan Husband<\/strong> and<strong> Christian Sztolcman<\/strong> glided their way to win in the 400 free relay, besting Texas A&amp;M by almost three seconds<\/p>\n<p>For the Aggies, <strong>Baylor Nelson<\/strong> tallied multiple top finishes including in the 200 free (1:36.91), 200 back (1:45.01) and 200 IM (1:48.66). <strong>Batuhan Filiz<\/strong> made his A&amp;M debut with two big wins in the distance events, swimming 9:10.00 in the 1,000 free and 4:24.62 in the 500 free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andres Puente<\/strong> won the 200 breaststroke (1:58.77). <strong>Jace Brown<\/strong> led the Aggies in butterfly, finishing first in the 200 with a time of 1:48.17<strong>. Allen Bottego<\/strong> grabbed the top spot in the 1-meter with a final score of 373.28.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/college\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More college news<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/sidearm.sites\/tamu.sidearmsports.com\/documents\/2023\/1\/4\/AU_vs_TAMU_results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Results<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Women&#8217;s meet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The No. 19 Auburn women beat the No. 15 Aggies 172-128.<\/p>\n<p>In the opening 200 medley relay, Auburn&#8217;s <strong>Daisy Platts, Anastasia Makarova, Claudia Thamm<\/strong> and <strong>Lexie Mulvihill<\/strong> outpaced the field to earn the win (1:40.19)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emily Hetzer<\/strong> won the 500 in 4:52.34.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kensley Merritt, Ellie Waldrep<\/strong> and <strong>Daisy Platts<\/strong> swept the 100 backstroke with Merritt winning in 54.40.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meghan Lee,<\/strong> Maloney and Platts served up yet another sweep later in the afternoon in the 200 back with Lee clocking a 1:58.08.<\/p>\n<p>Lee, along with <strong>Casey Cullen<\/strong>, dialed up huge efforts in the 200 fly for a 1-2 finish with Lee winning in 1:58.83 for Auburn.<\/p>\n<p>Mulvihill brought her domination in 50 free into the new year, collecting another win in the event on Wednesday with a 22.88.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brynn Curtis<\/strong> won the 200 breast in 2:14.11.<\/p>\n<p>Ownbey rounded out her day in arguably her best event, the 200 IM. The junior hit the wall first by nearly a full second (2:01.45).<\/p>\n<p>For Texas A&amp;M, <strong>Chloe Stepanek<\/strong> led the way for the Aggies in the additional freestyle events with top finishes in the 200 (1:47.60) and 100 (49.79), while also earning second place in the 50 (22.98).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abby Grottle<\/strong> won the 1,000 free (9:56.29). <strong>Charlotte Longbottom<\/strong> swam to a first-place time of 1:02.60 in the 100 breast. Swimming the 100 fly to a 53.89, <strong>Olivia Theall<\/strong> secured first place.
