Splashbacks 2022 (Sept.-Oct.): Caeleb Dressel Provides Update; Summer McIntosh Duels With Katie Ledecky<\/strong><\/p>\n

A new year is around the corner and if 2023 is anything like the past 12 months, there will be plenty to discuss and follow. Over the last year, the sport witnessed its share of standout performances, some controversy, the emergence of new stars and a jam-packed competition calendar.<\/p>\n

Keeping with tradition, Swimming World will wrap up the 2022 campaign with its annual series titled, Splashbacks. Through six installments that are broken into two-month periods, we will revisit some of the biggest (and most-read) stories from the past year.<\/p>\n

Here are the stories that captured the most attention in September and October.<\/p>\n

1. Caeleb Dressel Breaks Silence With Instagram Post<\/a><\/p>\n

A few months after he withdrew from the World Championships to prioritize his mental health, Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> took to social media to provide an update on his status. Through his Instagram account, Dressel acknowledged plans to eventually return to swimming, noting that he could attain happiness while handling the demands of the sport.<\/p>\n

2. India\u2019s National Junior Record Holder Vedaant Madhavan Commits to Virginia Tech<\/a><\/p>\n

In this college commitment article, the decision of India\u2019s Vedaant Madhavan<\/strong> to attend Virginia Tech was highlighted. Madhavan competed at the World Junior Championships and, once arriving on campus, is expected to bolster the Hokies in the freestyle events.<\/p>\n

3. Summer McIntosh Edges Katie Ledecky in 400 Freestyle at World Cup in Toronto; Swims Are No. 2 and No. 3 All-Time<\/a><\/p>\n

In a showdown at the World Cup stop in Toronto, Summer McIntosh<\/strong> narrowly defeated Katie Ledecky<\/strong> in the 400 freestyle, with their times representing the No. 2 and No. 3 performances in history. The clash was an encore to their duel at the World Championships, where Ledecky claimed the gold medal to McIntosh\u2019s silver.<\/p>\n

4. The Missed Turn: Celebrating the Career of German Freestyle Star Franziska van Almsick<\/a><\/p>\n

In this feature from the September issue of Swimming World Magazine, the career of German sensation Franziska van Almsick<\/strong> is appreciated. Van Almsick was a world-record setter who does not receive her proper due to the lack of a gold medal on her resume. During her career, the German captured 42 medals in international competition, including four silver and six bronze at the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n

5. Training Pool Bucket List: Eight Unique Pools Around the World<\/a><\/p>\n

This feature looked at some of the most-unique training pools found around the globe, including the home of the Bondi Icebergs Club in Sydney.
