I told them I was going to go 7:25 so I kind of knew what I was going to go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd off the back of the weekend before at the Scottish champs \u2013 going 14:14 in the 1500 \u2013 I knew I was going to be fast because 800 is more my event.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Days earlier, Wiffen had gone sixth all-time in the longest race in the pool with a national record of 14:14.45 to top the 2022 world rankings.<\/p>\n<p>It was 2.43secs swifter than the 14:16.88 in which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daniel-wiffin-becomes-sixth-fastest-man-in-short-course-history-over-1500-with-irish-record-of-1414-45\/\">Paltrinieri won the world short-course title<\/a>\u00a0in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>And his 800 record was also 4.03secs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-day-5-mens-events-gregorio-paltrinieris-golden-home-coming-for-a-slice-of-world-short-course-history-in-the-800m-freestyle\/\">swifter than the championship record of 7:29.99<\/a> in which the Italian claimed the title in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Wiffen said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a big confidence boost that I took off so much time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of beating Greg, I guess it\u2019s different because he is in a different country. He will trust you to do the work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re not going to put the effort in, he is not going to shout at you and scream at you to start doing it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s more you\u2019ve got to find a way yourself to do it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel Wiffen put his hands on his head as he recalled how he became the first Irishman to set a European record in the pool.
