LOS ANGELES, March 26. FOUR-time Olympic gold medalist Dara Torres has renewed her individual endorsement deal through 2004 with leading swimsuit manufacturer, Speedo, it was announced today. <\/p>\n
A 1984, '88 and '92 Olympian, Torres retired after the Barcelona Games but made an unprecedented comeback beginning in 1999. When she made the 2000 US Olympic team, she became only the second American swimmer to make four Olympic teams; when she swam in Sydney, she became the first — and only — American swimmer to compete in four Games. (Jill Sterkel made the 1976, '80, '84 and '88 teams, but due to Jimmy Carter's boycott, she did not compete in the 1980 Games in Moscow.)<\/p>\n
At the 2000 Sydney Games, coming off of a seven-year hiatus from the sport, Torres won two gold medals as part of both world record-breaking relay teams (400m freestyle and 400m medley relay). She added three bronze medals in the 100m butterfly, 50m free and 100m free. Both of Torres\u2019 two other gold medals were earned in the 400m free relay, at the 1992 Barcelona Games, and the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. Torres earned a silver medal in the 400m medley relay and a bronze in the 400m freestyle relay, both at the 1988 Games in Seoul. <\/p>\n
In all, she has won nine Olympic medals, second all-time only to Jenny Thompson among American women.<\/p>\n
Torres retired for the second time following the 2000 Olympic Games and currently focuses on a television career.<\/p>\n
Television audiences may recognize Torres for providing sports commentary on NBC, ESPN, Fox Sports Net and currently, as a host for USA Network\u2019s \u201cPGA Tour Sunday.\u201d <\/p>\n
Speedo's renewal of Torres\u2019 sponsorship includes retail and media appearances, many of them tied to Speedo's 2004 Olympic marketing campaign. Additionally, she will provide input as Speedo continues its push into active lifestyle apparel and accessories.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust like I\u2019ve expanded my career beyond the pool, I look forward to continuing to assist Speedo's efforts in translating the brand\u2019s racing dominance to the broader sports category,\u201d said Torres.<\/p>\n
Since 2000, Torres has demonstrated on-air versatility, working as co-host and correspondent on such top-rated programs as \u201cLive with Regis and Kelly\u201d and \u201cGood Morning America.\u201d Other television work includes \u201cNHL Cool Shots\u201d (ESPN), \u201cFox Sports Sunday\u201d, \u201cInside Edition\u201d, and the \u201cTae-Bo\u201d workout videotapes. <\/p>\n
Speedo celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2003 as the world\u2019s top-selling swimwear brand. The brand\u2019s heritage derives from its leadership in competitive swimming, where 30 of 33 Olympic gold medals were earned in Speedo suits at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. <\/p>\n
