﻿{"id":518536,"date":"2022-12-16T02:53:41","date_gmt":"2022-12-16T09:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=518536"},"modified":"2022-12-16T10:03:22","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T17:03:22","slug":"world-championships-day-four-mens-finals-confusion-reigns-after-start-mishap-in-mens-50-backstroke-forces-a-re-swim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-day-four-mens-finals-confusion-reigns-after-start-mishap-in-mens-50-backstroke-forces-a-re-swim\/","title":{"rendered":"World Championships, Day Four Men&#8217;s Finals: Confusion Reigns After Start Mishap In Men&#8217;s 50 Backstroke Forces a Re-Swim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>World Championships, Day Four Men&#8217;s Finals: Confusion Reigns After Start Mishap In Men&#8217;s 50 Backstroke Forces a Re-Swim<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There was a sensation in the men\u2019s 50m backstroke at tonight\u2019s World Short Course Swimming Championships after half the field failed to hear a false start buzzer \u2013 with the race having to be re-swum.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s <strong>Isaac Cooper,<\/strong> American<strong> Ryan Murphy <\/strong>and South African <strong>Pieter Coetze<\/strong> \u00a0all swam what was a \u201cno race\u201d after the 15m false start rope failed to activate.<\/p>\n<p>Cooper won the \u201cno race\u201d in 22.49 \u2013 a time under the World Junior Record and there was deathly silence when he looked around trying to make sense of what happened.<\/p>\n<p>It was announced that the race would be re-swum at 9:15 local time.<\/p>\n<p>After the eight athletes heard the starting signal for the title race, multiple beeps from the starting system immediately rang out. The signals caused immediate chaos, with three of the athletes stopping and five proceeding through their races.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, the situation was the result of a starting error and officials were forced to determine a new time for the event. Ultimately, the decision was made to place the event later in the Night Four program, following completion of the 100 individual medley races.<\/p>\n<p>The havoc in Melbourne marks the second straight edition of the World Championships in which the final of the 50 backstroke has been controversial. At the long-course World Champs in Budapest last summer, American <strong>Justin Ress<\/strong> initially appeared to capture the gold medal, only to be disqualified for a finishing violation.
