{"id":518254,"date":"2022-12-15T03:51:37","date_gmt":"2022-12-15T10:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=518254"},"modified":"2022-12-15T08:58:09","modified_gmt":"2022-12-15T15:58:09","slug":"world-championships-day-three-mens-finals-kieran-smith-wins-400-free-in-american-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-day-three-mens-finals-kieran-smith-wins-400-free-in-american-record\/","title":{"rendered":"World Championships, Day Three Men&#8217;s Finals: Kieran Smith Wins 400 Free In American Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>World Championships, Day Three Men&#8217;s Finals: Kieran Smith Wins 400 Free In American Record<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Kieran Smith<\/strong> held off the late challenge of <strong>Thomas Neill<\/strong> to take the 400 free title in an American record at the <strong>World Championships<\/strong>\u00a0in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2022\/16th-fina-world-swimming-championships-25m-live-results\">Live results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2022-world-short-course-championships-day-3-day-3\/international-elite\/2022\/December\/15?rtn=%2Fresults%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day 3 Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Tokyo 400 free bronze medallist took over the lead on the fifth 25 and led thereafter and came home to win in 3:34.38, lowering the national record of 3:34.81 that had stood to <strong>Peter Vanderkaay<\/strong> since February 2009.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old is only the second American man to win the title and the first since <strong>Chad Carvin<\/strong> in Athens in March 2000, two months before Smith was born.<\/p>\n<p>Neill was second in 3:35.05 with <strong>Danys Rapsys<\/strong> adding bronze to his 2021 silver in 3:36.26.<\/p>\n<p>It was a dominant performance by Smith who led at 25 before <strong>Katsuhiro Matsumoto<\/strong> went 0.02 ahead at 50.<\/p>\n<p>Smith held a 1.08 lead over Neill at 200 with the Australian gradually eating into the deficit from lane two.<\/p>\n<p>From 0.94 at the 350 mark, Neill reduced it to 0.64 at the final turn but Smith was not going to be caught and claimed the win by 0.67.<\/p>\n<p>Smith, who won relay gold at Budapest worlds in June and at the Abu Dhabi edition last year,\u00a0 said through USA Swimming:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;That race was fantastic. It felt really strong from the start. I felt a lot of confidence when I built such a big lead at the 200, then I was fighting on the last 100 but I got it done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It is the first time that I have been at the top of the (individual) podium so it&#8217;s a new chapter\u202fin my career.
