{"id":518218,"date":"2022-12-15T01:49:29","date_gmt":"2022-12-15T08:49:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=518218"},"modified":"2022-12-16T13:23:49","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T20:23:49","slug":"world-championships-day-3-emma-mckeon-dominates-100-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-day-3-emma-mckeon-dominates-100-free\/","title":{"rendered":"World Championships, Day Three Women&#8217;s Finals: Emma McKeon Dominates 100 Free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>World Championships, Day Three Women&#8217;s Finals: Emma McKeon Dominates 100 Free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the marauding form that <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> has been in this week in Melbourne, the only question heading into the final of the 100 freestyle 2022 FINA Short-Course World Championships was if <strong>Cate Campbell\u2019s<\/strong> world record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/emma-mckeon-chasing-countrywomans-world-record-in-100-freestyle-is-sub-50-possible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would survive her onslaught<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> had plenty to say about the victory being more than a formality, to be fair. But ultimately, there was no stopping McKeon.<\/p>\n<p>McKeon delivered a supremely controlled race, the reigning Olympic champion holding off the field and winning in 50.77 seconds. That didn\u2019t quite take down Campbell\u2019s world record of 50.25, but it did unseat the champion in 2021 in Abu Dhabi, Haughey, while downing her meet record.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2022\/16th-fina-world-swimming-championships-25m-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2022-world-short-course-championships-day-3-day-3\/international-elite\/2022\/December\/15?rtn=%2Fresults%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day 3 Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2022-fina-world-short-course-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet information page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yM0ytOJlFhk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Stream<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Women&#8217;s 100 freestyle<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>World Record: Cate Campbell, Australia 50.25 (2017)<\/li>\n<li>Championship Record: Siobhan Haughey, Hong Kong 50.98 (2021)<\/li>\n<li>World Junior Record: Kayla Sanchez, Canada 51.45 (2018)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>McKeon took control from <strong>Torri Huske<\/strong> after the first wall and never relinquished it. Haughey delivered a strong swim \u2013 50.87, a tenth faster than she was in winning last year \u2013 but never put McKeon under serious bother. <strong>Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> rounded out the podium in third in 51.25.<\/p>\n<p>Haughey had set the pace in prelims in 52.04, .19 up on the duo of Steenbergen and McKeon. The Aussie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-day-two-semi-finals-wjr-for-david-popovici-crooks-mckeon-martinenghi-king-lead-the-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took control in semis<\/a> by going 51.28. Coupled with her sensational 49.96 anchor split in the relay, it cemented her as the clear favorite.<\/p>\n<p>She was nearly joined by a countrywoman, but <strong>Madison Wilson<\/strong> started too far back, in eighth at the 100-meter mark. She climbed to fifth at the final wall and then fourth overall in 51.70. That sent Huske, the winner of the 50 fly, down a spot to fifth in 52.04. (Huske was also the only holdover from the final of this event at long-course Worlds in Budapest this summer.) Fellow American <strong>Natalie Hinds<\/strong> was eighth in 52.24.<\/p>\n<p>Steenbergen\u2019s medal is particularly impressive given that she has a double on the night, with the semifinals of the 100 individual medley looming. The same is true for France\u2019s <strong>Beryl Gastaldello,<\/strong> who finished seventh. Sixth was Canadian <strong>Taylor Ruck,<\/strong> bumping up two spots from semis.<\/p>\n<p>McKeon told Channel 9:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u00a0 couldn\u2019t see anything&#8230;I just wanted to get my hand on the wall first&#8230; it was so special for me..in front of my grandparents&#8230;(Tony and Jenny Woodhouse)who live down here in Melbourne and that was my motivation tonight was doing it for them..for them to come out here and watch me race.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They have always been my number one supporters..they always watch me on TV&#8230;they message me all the time&#8230;.they have been there for my entire career along with my brother David (a two time Olympian)&#8230;\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"518230\"
