Popovici; Crooks, McKeon, Martinenghi &amp; King Lead Way<\/h4>\n<p><strong>David Popovici<\/strong> set a world junior record (WJR) of 45.91 in the 100 free semis en-route to qualifying fifth for Thursday&#8217;s final at the <strong>World Short-Course Championships<\/strong> in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>The Romanian went in the first semi where he came back on the final 25 to finish second behind <strong>Maxime Grousset<\/strong> who clocked 45.58.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2022-world-short-course-championships-day-2-day-2\/international-elite\/2022\/December\/14?rtn=%2Fresults%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day 2 Results<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2022\/16th-fina-world-swimming-championships-25m-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jordan Crooks<\/strong> reproduced his fine form from the prelims with the<strong> Cayman Islands<\/strong> swimmer, who studies and trains at the University of Tennessee, booking lane four in 45.55 after holding off the late charge by world record-holder <strong>Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> (45.66) in the second semi.<\/p>\n<p>Also through are <strong>Alessandro Miressi<\/strong> (45.74), 100 back world record-holder <strong>Thomas Ceccon<\/strong> (46.13), <strong>Pan Zhanie<\/strong> (46.19) and <strong>Tom Dean<\/strong> (46.20).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s still early days in the short-course pool for Popovici whose 2022 has so far included the 100-200 free double at both the <strong>World Championships<\/strong> in Budapest and <strong>Europeans<\/strong> in Rome where he set the WR of 46.86 over two lengths, reducing to history <strong>Cesar Cielo<\/strong>&#8216;s supersuit mark from 2009.<\/p>\n<p>There were also four golds at the European Juniors and three at the world juniors.<\/p>\n<p>He split 10.68\/22.40\/34.30 before coming home in 11.61 to lower the WJR mark of 46.11 set by <strong>Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong> in December 2018.<\/p>\n<p>It came as somewhat of a shock to the 18-year-old who said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t think I would be breaking any more junior records this year but it looks like I did, so it was a pleasant surprise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t think I would be swimming this fast, but sometimes I can doubt myself<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I think that I am my biggest critic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I am still learning and I am going to learn some more during the final.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Not that Popovici has learned to enjoy the small pool, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I swam well, but against my will because I still hate short course.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I have to adapt but it&#8217;s looking good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I am<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/david-popovici-viewing-world-short-course-champs-as-learning-opportunity-eager-to-duel-with-kyle-chalmers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> currently learning<\/a> and I just came from the lesson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Tomorrow for the final, once more, I am going to class Freestyle<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the much anticipated women\u2019s 100m freestyle semi-finals it was Olympic champion\u00a0<strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong>\u00a0from Australia who came out on top in semi-final two in a dress rehearsal of what may well unfold in tomorrow night\u2019s final.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKeon (who split 49.96 &#8211; the fastest time ever recorded by a woman in Australia\u2019s 4x100m freestyle relay world record on the opening night) clocked 51.28 ahead of Hong Kong\u2019s <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong>\u00a0(51.69) and Australia\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Madi Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0(51.82) &#8211; the top three overall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKeon was the freestyle sprint star at last year\u2019s Tokyo Olympics winning the 50-100m freestyle double \u2013 and she now has the chance to add her first individual short-course gold to her decorated medal tally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It remains to be seen if she can crack\u00a0<strong>Cate Campbell<\/strong>\u2019s 2017 world record of 50.25 \u2013 but if the 49.96 is any indication she\u2019s right on the\u00a0target.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also qualifying for the top eight are:\u00a0<strong>Marrit Steenbergen\u00a0<\/strong>(NED) 51.85,\u00a0<strong>Beryl Gastaldello\u00a0<\/strong>(FRA) 52.09),\u00a0<strong>Torri Huske<\/strong>\u00a0(USA) 52.11,\u00a0<strong>Natalie Hinds\u00a0<\/strong>(USA) 52.16 and\u00a0<strong>Taylor Ruck<\/strong>\u00a0(CAN) 52.27.<\/p>\n<p><img \/><\/p>\n<h4>Men&#8217;s 100m Breaststroke<\/h4>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 100m breaststroke final will feature <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> and <strong>Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong> &#8211; who won gold and bronze at the Tokyo Olympics &#8211; plus <strong>Nic Fink<\/strong>, four-time medal winner in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p>Peaty hasn&#8217;t competed on the global stage since Tokyo after which he competed on TV show &#8216;Strictly Come Dancing&#8217; before injury intervened to force his withdrawal from the World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>In his absence, Martinenghi won the world title ahead of <strong>Arno Kamminga<\/strong> &#8211; absent from Melbourne &#8211; and Fink.<\/p>\n<p>Peaty won the first semi in 56.42, followed by a nod of the head, before Martinenghi booked top spot for the final in the second semi in 56.01 ahead of Fink (56.25) and <strong>Qin Halyang<\/strong> (56.38).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"517953\" Breaststroke<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When American breaststroking queen\u00a0<strong>Lilly<\/strong><strong>\u00a0King\u00a0<\/strong>left her last World SC Championships in 2016 in snow-covered Windsor (CAN) she packed four gold and one silver medal in her luggage as she headed home for Christmas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On night three of these Championships, King will be hoping to turn that silver to Jamaican ace\u00a0<strong>Alia Atkinson<\/strong>\u00a0into gold in the 100m breaststroke final for an early Christmas\u00a0present in 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olympic champion in 2016, King is the fastest qualifier for the final in 1:03.33, marginally ahead of Lithuania\u2019s 2012 Olympic champion\u00a0<strong>Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong>\u00a0who also won this title in Istanbul the same year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other qualifiers are\u00a0<strong>Reona Aoki<\/strong>\u00a0(JPN)
