{"id":517922,"date":"2022-12-14T03:09:42","date_gmt":"2022-12-14T10:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=517922"},"modified":"2022-12-14T09:24:20","modified_gmt":"2022-12-14T16:24:20","slug":"world-championships-day-two-ryan-murphy-shakes-the-world-record-with-emphatic-100m-backstroke-gold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-day-two-ryan-murphy-shakes-the-world-record-with-emphatic-100m-backstroke-gold\/","title":{"rendered":"World Championships, Day Two Finals: Ryan Murphy Shakes The World Record With Emphatic 100m Backstroke Gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ryan Murphy Shakes The World Record With Emphatic 100 Backstroke Gold<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four-time Olympic gold medalist <strong>Ryan Murphy <\/strong>has created his own slice of swimming history at the World Short Course Championships in Melbourne tonight, becoming the first US swimmer to win a second 100 backstroke crown and his second gold medal of the night.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2022-world-short-course-championships-day-2-day-2\/international-elite\/2022\/December\/14?rtn=%2Fresults%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day 2 Results<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2022\/16th-fina-world-swimming-championships-25m-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 27-year-old led all the way to score an emphatic victory, his first time under 49 seconds with a time of 48.50 \u2013 just 0.17 outside fellow American <strong>Coleman Stewart\u2019<\/strong>s world record.\u00a0Silver went to Italy\u2019s <strong>Lorenzo Mora<\/strong> in 49.04 with \u201coutside smoke\u201d in lane eight, Australia\u2019s <strong>Isaac Cooper<\/strong> taking the bronze in a personal best of 49.52.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the night, Murphy led the U.S. to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-united-states-demolish-world-record-in-mixed-4x50m-medley-relay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gold in a world record time in a thrilling 4x50m mixed medley relay<\/a> win with <strong>Nic Fink, Kate Douglass<\/strong> and <strong>Torri Huske.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Murphy won the event in Hangzhou in 2018 when he joined a who\u2019s who of U.S. backstrokers to take gold in this event, with <strong>Tripp Schwenk <\/strong>winning the inaugural World SC Championships in Palma de Majorca in 1993.
