McKeon was Olympic gold medalist in the event in 2021, but it was Olympic silver medalist and defending champion <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> who picked up the top seed by a narrow margin over McKeon.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the women&#8217;s 100 breast was set to feature defending short course world champion <strong>Tang Qianting <\/strong>and\u00a0long course world champion\u00a0<strong>Benedetta Pilato<\/strong>, but it was past Olympic champions <strong>Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Lilly King<\/strong> who recorded the fastest and third-fastest times, respectively, with rising South African\u00a0<strong>Lara Van Niekerk<\/strong> finishing in between.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2022\/16th-fina-world-swimming-championships-25m-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2022-fina-world-short-course-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet information page<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Women&#8217;s 800 Freestyle Slowest Heats<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the slower heats of the 800 free, Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Gabrielle Roncatto<\/strong> posted the top time by one hundredth over Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yukimi Moriyama<\/strong>. Roncatto clocked 8:25.45, with Moriyama just behind at 8:25.46. The Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Imani de Jong<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>posted the third-best time at 8:25.84. Those times will be compared with those posted in Wednesday evening&#8217;s final. Haughey established the time to beat in the 100 free prelims with a mark of 52.04 while the Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> tied for the win in the final heat at 52.23 for the next-best mark in prelims. Meilutyte posted the quickest time in the final heat after South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lara van Niekerk<\/strong> (1:03.93) and the United States&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Lilly King<\/strong> (1:03.94) had already been under 1:04.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tang Qianting<\/strong>, who was the surprise short course world champion in the event last year, qualified fourth in 1:04.07. Last year&#8217;s silver medalist, Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sophie Hansson<\/strong>, took ninth in 1:04.64, while the silver medalist from long course Worlds, Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Anna Elendt<\/strong>, qualified sixth (1:04.53). A team from the Netherlands anchored by\u00a0<strong>Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> placed third in 7:45.73 while China, Canada, Brazil, Japan and New Zealand also qualified for the final.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Liu Yaxin<\/strong> posted the fastest split of the prelims with her 1:53.90, and <strong>Erika Fairweather<\/strong>, already the silver medalist in the 400 free, went 1:54.24 on the leadoff leg for the eight-place New Zealand team. Harris (1:54.26) and Flickinger (1:54.39) were the only other swimmers under 1:55.<\/p>\n<p>In Melbourne, the three women who joined Smith to led the U.S. to an 800 free relay long course world title this year are absent, but\u00a0<strong>Erin Gemmell<\/strong> will surely be added to the roster while\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Torri Huske<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Claire Curzan<\/strong> are all possibilities.
