{"id":517646,"date":"2022-12-12T20:14:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T03:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=517646"},"modified":"2022-12-12T20:17:16","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T03:17:16","slug":"kutztown-university-to-reinstate-mens-swimming-in-2024-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kutztown-university-to-reinstate-mens-swimming-in-2024-25\/","title":{"rendered":"Kutztown University to Reinstate Men\u2019s Swimming in 2024-25"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kutztown University to Reinstate Men\u2019s Swimming in 2024-25<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kutztown University in Pennsylvania will reinstate men\u2019s swimming as a varsity sport for the 2024-25 academic year, the school announced Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Men\u2019s swimming makes its return after being axed in 2009 due to \u201cuniversity-wide financial cuts.\u201d The men\u2019s program had begun in 1970-71. Women\u2019s swimming survived that cut.<\/p>\n<p>Kutztown will join seven other men\u2019s programs in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), comprised of Division II public schools in the Commonwealth. Kutztown will join 77 other Division II schools.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/ncaa-division-ii-coverage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCAA Division II coverage<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited about the opportunity to bring more student-athletes to our campus,\u201d Kutztown president Dr. <strong>Kenneth S. Hawkinson<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/kubears.com\/news\/2022\/12\/12\/mens-swimming-kutztown-university-to-add-mens-swimming-as-its-23rd-varsity-sport.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a university statement<\/a>. \u201cWe have been growing our enrollment through athletics for the past few years through the addition of women\u2019s acrobatics and tumbling in 2020, and the commitment to men\u2019s swimming for the 2024-25 season. Our student-athletes continue to persist and retain at a high level, and their grade point averages remain at or above that of the overall student body. Men\u2019s swimming will certainly contribute to those numbers, as well as support recruitment and retention for our women\u2019s swim team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tim Flannery<\/strong>, who coached the men\u2019s team for its final 14 seasons and is in his 26th season coaching the women\u2019s team, will oversee the rebuild of men\u2019s swimming. Kutztown will offer 23 varsity programs (14 women\u2019s, nine men\u2019s).<\/p>\n<p>Kutztown jettisoned a respectable swimming history in 2009. The Golden Bears had had 22 winning dual-meet seasons, 11 All-Americans and one national champion. They placed as high as 12th nationally on two occasions (1977-78 and 1995-96) and peaked at third in the PSAC Championships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so excited for our men\u2019s swimming alumni and our women\u2019s swim team,\u201d Flannery said. \u201cIt was devastating to lose our men\u2019s program in 2009. There is no question having a men\u2019s program will help our women\u2019s team. The biggest and best swim programs sponsor both teams. The swimmers from both teams tend to form strong bonds and push each other to be better student-athletes on many levels. I am thankful to our administration for making this decision and understanding the value of intercollegiate athletics in general.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural men\u2019s swimming roster will begin with 12 swimmers. The women\u2019s roster is slated to grow from 15 to 20 members, adding 17 new spots by 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel this is the right time to reintroduce men\u2019s swimming,\u201d Kutztown athletic director <strong>Renee Hellert<\/strong> said. \u201cThe university\u2019s efforts toward Title IX are optimal through roster management, the addition of women\u2019s acrobatics and tumbling, facility enhancement and the growth of the women\u2019s coaching staff.
