{"id":517531,"date":"2022-12-10T19:16:24","date_gmt":"2022-12-11T02:16:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=517531"},"modified":"2022-12-10T20:01:57","modified_gmt":"2022-12-11T03:01:57","slug":"sandpipers-knock-off-carmel-400-free-relay-record-to-conclude-juniors-west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sandpipers-knock-off-carmel-400-free-relay-record-to-conclude-juniors-west\/","title":{"rendered":"Sandpipers Knock Off Carmel NAG 400 Free Relay Record to Conclude Juniors West"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sandpipers Knock Off Carmel 400 Free Relay Record to Conclude Juniors West<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A dominant performance at Junior Nationals West for the Sandpipers of Nevada finished exactly the same way it started: with a National Age Group record in a freestyle relay.\u00a0<strong>Bella Sims<\/strong>, who had already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/bella-sims-climbs-into-top-10-all-time-in-200-back-and-200-fly-to-conclude-junior-nationals-west\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won the 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly Saturday evening while moving into the all-time top-10 in both events<\/a>, led off in 47.16 to give her team a big lead, and<strong> Katie Grimes<\/strong>, fresh off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-grimes-swims-1526-17-to-become-fifth-fastest-swimmer-ever-in-1650-free-at-juniors-west\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a win in the 1650 free<\/a> plus podium finishes in the 200 back and 200 fly, handled the second leg.\u00a0<strong>Macky Hodges<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Claire Weinstein<\/strong> finished up the win as the team clocked 3:13.15.<\/p>\n<p>That time annihilated the existing 15-18 National Age Group record of 3:15.38 by more than two seconds. The old mark, set in 2015, was set by a loaded group from the Carmel Swim Club that included\u00a0<strong>Veronica Burchill<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Claire Adams<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kendall Smith<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Amy Bilquist<\/strong>. The Sandpipers swimmers, two of whom are already Olympians and another of whom jumped onto the senior international level in 2022, surpassed that mark even though the majority of the group are not sprint specialists.<\/p>\n<p>Mission Viejo&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Teia Salvino<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Asia Kozan<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Gracyn Aquino<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Teagan O&#8217;Dell<\/strong> finished second in 3:16.70. O&#8217;Dell (48.08) and Kozan (48.49) provided the second and third-fastest splits of the entire field, respectively.
