Competing at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, Diehl cracked the 1:40 barrier and prevailed in a mark of 1:39.62. The 17-year-old needed that type of performance, as he was challenged by Will Modglin, who clocked in at 1:40.54. Both swimmers were faster than the previous meet record, set by future Olympian Jacob Pebley in 2011.

Diehl attacked the race from the outset, going 23.00 for opening 50 yards and hitting the midway point in 47.77. At that point, Diehl held a 1.45-second lead over Modglin, and that advantage increased to 1.76 seconds at 150 yards. Diehl paid the price for his front-end speed down the stretch as Modglin surged, but there was too much deficit to make up. Modglin was the champion of the 100 backstroke on Friday night.

In the boys’ 100 freestyle, Kaii Winkler delivered another sensational performance, just missing the NAG (15-16) he set in the morning heats. Winkler popped a time of 42.22, which was .01 off his 42.21 record from prelims. Along with a 42.52 effort from the Florida High School Championships, Winkler now has the three-fastest times in the history of the 100 freestyle in the 15-16 age group.

Winkler opened with a split of 20.17 and came home in 22.05. Joining him in the sub-43 club was Brendan Whitfield, who touched the wall in 42.86. Scotty Buff was third in 43.07.

In the girls’ 1650 freestyle, Michaela Mattes used a late charge to grab gold in 16:00.20, with victory on the boys’ side of the event going to Tristan DenBrok in 14:58.81. Titles in the 200 breaststroke went to Katie Christopherson (2:07.81) and Ben Delmar (1:55.09).

<a
