As a Canadian, short-course competition is conducted in meters – like the rest of the world. But when McIntosh shifted her training base to Florida and the Sarasota Sharks, it was a matter of time before she was given the opportunity to show her ability in the uniquely American setup.

She clearly took advantage of her debut.

Wrapping up a spectacular showing at the Winter Junior Championships-East, McIntosh added titles in the 200-yard backstroke and 200 butterfly on Saturday night. She won the 200 back in 1:49.97, the effort marking her third solo victory of the meet, complementing earlier gold medals in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. McIntosh was followed in second place by 14-year-old Charlotte Crush, who produced a swim of 1:52.75. McIntosh’s time was good for a Winter Juniors record, as she bettered the 1:50.16 by Katharine Berkoff from 2018.

McIntosh trailed Crush at the midway point of the race, 53.53 to 53.57, but the Canadian had too much firepower over the back half. McIntosh outsplit Crush by more than a second on the third 50 and was 1.45 seconds faster on the closing 50 to comfortably pull away.

Later in the session, McIntosh put her 200 butterfly talent on display for a fourth gold medal of the meet. McIntosh led wire to wire and touched in 1:51.40, an effort that was just shy of the 1:51.24 best of Regan Smith among 15-and-16-year-olds. McIntosh’s brilliance in the event was hardly a surprise, as she is the reigning world champion in the 200 fly from over the summer in Budapest.

For a finale, McIntosh led off the Sarasota Sharks’ winning 400 freestyle relay, which touched in 3:16.25. McIntosh dropped a 47.88 outing on the front of the relay. She was joined by Addison Sauickie (48.91), Maeve Eckerman (49.80) and Gracie Weyant (49.66).

Just after McIntosh captured the 200 backstroke, Carmel’s Alex Shackell earned her fourth solo victory of the meet when she recorded a swim of 47.44 in the 100 freestyle. That time, which was not far off Claire Curzan’s NAG record of 47.23, handed Shackell a half-second decision over runnerup Erika Pelaez, who also went sub-48 with a mark of 47.91. Shackell opened up a lead on the opening 50, splitting 22.64 and she returned in 24.80. The triumph backed up prior triumphs in the 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle.

In the 200 fly, Shackell was the runnerup to McIntosh, going 1:53.52. She also anchored Carmel’s 400 freestyle relay to second place behind an anchor split of 47.28.

<a href="http://www.swmeets.com/Realtime/SC%20Juniors/2022/" target="_blank"
