{"id":517376,"date":"2022-12-07T21:15:14","date_gmt":"2022-12-08T04:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=517376"},"modified":"2022-12-07T21:15:14","modified_gmt":"2022-12-08T04:15:14","slug":"wisconsin-minnesota-divvy-up-big-ten-weekly-honors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/wisconsin-minnesota-divvy-up-big-ten-weekly-honors\/","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin, Minnesota Divvy Up Big Ten Weekly Honors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Wisconsin, Minnesota Divvy Up Big Ten Weekly Honors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin and Minnesota divided up the Big Ten Weekly Honors, released on Wednesday, with three nods each.<\/p>\n<p>The Badgers supplied <strong>Phoebe Bacon<\/strong> as <a href=\"https:\/\/bigten.org\/news\/2022\/12\/7\/general-wisconsin-and-minnesota-take-home-womens-swimming-diving-weekly-awards.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women\u2019s swimmer of the week<\/a> and <strong>Blair Stoneburg<\/strong> as women\u2019s freshman of the week. <strong>Jake Newmark<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/bigten.org\/news\/2022\/12\/7\/general-wisconsin-and-minnesota-collect-mens-swimming-and-diving-weekly-awards.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the men\u2019s swimmer of the week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Minnesota\u2019s <strong>Joy Zhu<\/strong> and <strong>Drew Bennett<\/strong> were the divers of the week, while <strong>Alberto Hernandez<\/strong> was the men\u2019s freshman of the week.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/big-ten-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Ten Swimming<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bacon starred at the Minnesota Invitational. She placed second in the 200 individual medley there with the fastest time in the Big Ten this season, at 1:55.13. She was third in both backstroke events, her time in the 100 (51.40 seconds) and 200 (1:51.22) setting the pace for the conference this season. It\u2019s her first Big Ten Women\u2019s Swimmer of the Year award this season, after the junior won the same week last year.<\/p>\n<p>Newmark finished second in the 200 back at the Minnesota Invitational in 1:41.65. He was third in the 200 freestyle (1:33.14) and sixth in the 500 free (4:17.35). All three times are the second-fastest in the Big Ten this season for the junior.<\/p>\n<p>Stoneburg earned her second career Big Ten honor. She placed fifth in the 500 free in 4:45.73 at Minnesota and added sixth in the 200 free. She was also seventh in the mile for Wisconsin. All three times were NCAA B cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Hernandez finished ninth in the 200 IM in 1:46.38, one of two NCAA B cuts he collected at the invitational. The freshman from Spain was part of the Golden Gophers\u2019 800 free relay that set a program record of 6:16.25, the fastest time in the conference this season and fifth-fastest in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>For the fifth time this season, Zhu is the diver of the week in the conference. The grad student from China obliterated the field, winning by 55 points in 1-meter and 33 points in 3-meter. She scored 340.25 on the lower board and 325.65 on 3-meter. She heads into the new year undefeated on the boards.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett, a Minnesota freshman, won the 3-meter event at the Gophers\u2019 home invitational with 363.30 points.
