{"id":517125,"date":"2022-12-02T14:55:02","date_gmt":"2022-12-02T21:55:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=517125"},"modified":"2022-12-02T18:24:49","modified_gmt":"2022-12-03T01:24:49","slug":"daniel-diehl-officially-downs-17-18-nag-in-100-back-at-u-s-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daniel-diehl-officially-downs-17-18-nag-in-100-back-at-u-s-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Daniel Diehl Officially Downs 17-18 NAG in 100 Back at U.S. Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Daniel Diehl Officially Downs 17-18 NAG in 100 Back at U.S. Open<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After his stellar summer while still 16 years old, it was only a matter of time before <strong>Daniel Diehl<\/strong> added the national-age group record in the boys 100 backstroke at the 17-18 age group to his resume.<\/p>\n<p>That day was Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/File\/00011700060102EC0101FFFFFFFFFF01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in prelims of the U.S. Open<\/a>, when Diehl led the field with a time of 53.11.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/us-open-day-3-prelims-regan-smith-aiming-for-victorious-double\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Open Day 3 Prelims: Regan Smith Aiming For Victorious Double<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At age 16 this summer, Diehl went faster than any 17- or 18-year-old in history in the 100 back. That seemed to be a promise of more to come, and he\u2019s duly cashing that in.<\/p>\n<p>Diehl re-set the 15-16 record several times \u2013 first to 53.59, then 53.40 in prelims <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/junior-pan-pacs-daniel-diehl-opens-prelims-with-nag-record-in-100-backstroke-erin-gemmell-looks-sharp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the Junior Pan Pacific hampionships<\/a> in August, then 53.27 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daniel-diehl-goes-53-27-in-downing-100-back-nag-again-at-junior-pan-pacs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in finals there<\/a>. That latter time was quicker than the 17-18 NAG owned by <strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong> (53.38 from 2013) and remains the 15-16 NAG.<\/p>\n<p>The older record wouldn\u2019t be Diehl\u2019s, though, until he formally aged up. That day came Friday, and he has a chance to take the record under 53 seconds in the evening\u2019s finals.<\/p>\n<p>Diehl went out in 25.87 and came back in 27.24 Friday morning.
