{"id":517108,"date":"2022-12-02T10:00:07","date_gmt":"2022-12-02T17:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=517108"},"modified":"2022-12-02T10:00:07","modified_gmt":"2022-12-02T17:00:07","slug":"us-open-day-3-prelims-regan-smith-aiming-for-victorious-double","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/us-open-day-3-prelims-regan-smith-aiming-for-victorious-double\/","title":{"rendered":"US Open Day 3 Prelims: Regan Smith Aiming For Victorious Double"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2022 US Open continued on Friday with Day 3 from Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.<\/p>\n<p>The Day 3 prelims session had heads in the men\u2019s and women\u2019s 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke for a packed morning in the pool.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a look at what happened in each event at the US Open Day 3 prelims:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chase-kalisz-regan-smith-post-impressive-200-im-wins-at-u-s-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day 2 recap<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>US Open: Women\u2019s 400 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After an epic battle with<strong> Katie Ledecky<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-edges-summer-mcintosh-by-eight-hundredths-in-epic-400-freestyle-duel-at-u-s-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the 400 freestyle<\/a> on Thursday, Canada\u2019s teen sensation<strong> Summer McIntosh<\/strong> claimed the top seed in the 400 IM. She touched the wall in 4:38.72holding off the field by nearly five seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s<strong> Emma Weyant t<\/strong>ook the second seed in 4:43.13, followed by<strong> Kathryn Hazle<\/strong> (4:50.55).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men\u2019s 400 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After a strong performance in the 200 IM on Thursday, Sun Devil Aquatics<strong>\u2019 Chase Kalisz<\/strong> took the top seed in the 400 IM on Friday morning. He finished the race in 4:20.58 to hold off the field by a second.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee\u2019<strong>s Landon Driggers<\/strong> took the second seed in 4:21.54, followed by Texas A&amp;M\u2019s<strong> Baylor Nelson (<\/strong>4:21.85).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>US Open: Women\u2019s 100 Butterfly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Three swimmers broke a minute in the prelims of the women\u2019s 100 butterfly, setting up an intriguing final.<\/p>\n<p>Sun Devil Aquatics\u2019 <strong>Regan Smith<\/strong> took the top seed in 58.07, still a second ahead of the other two.<\/p>\n<p>Louisville\u2019s<strong> Gabi Albiero<\/strong> took the second seed in 59.27, followed by<strong> Beata Nelson<\/strong> (59.44).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men\u2019s 100 Butterfly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Aquatic\u2019s<strong> Zach Harting<\/strong> claimed the top seed in the 100 butterfly. He finished in 51.99, setting himself up for a good final.<br \/>\nNC State\u2019s<strong> Luke Miller t<\/strong>ook the second seed in 52.38.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Cardinal Aquatic swimmer <strong>Nicholas Albiero<\/strong> took the third seed in 52.51, just minutes after a strong swim from his sister as the family looks for a big final.<\/p>\n<p>Kazakhstan\u2019s<strong> Mussin Adilbek<\/strong> was fourth (52.67) followed by Canada\u2019s<strong> Josh Liendo<\/strong> (52.80).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>US Open: Women\u2019s 200 Free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> cruised to the top seed in the 300 freestyle. She got to the wall in 1:57.70 to finish more than a second ahead of the field.<\/p>\n<p>NCAP\u2019s <strong>Erin Gemmell t<\/strong>ook the second seed at 1:58.90, followed by Tide\u2019s <strong>Leah Hayes<\/strong> (2:00.02).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men\u2019s 200 Free<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Olympian <strong>Jake Mitchell<\/strong>, now training in Florida, put together a strong 200 free to take the top seed. He got to the wall in 1:48.22 to hold off the field by a half second.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil\u2019s <strong>Guilherme Costa<\/strong> took the second spot in 1:48.79 and <strong>Zane Grothe<\/strong> was third in 1:49.12.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>US Open: Women\u2019s 100 Breaststroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ireland\u2019s<strong> Mona McSharry<\/strong> used a strong first split to hold off the field in the 100 breaststroke. She got tot he wall in 1:08.24.<\/p>\n<p>Duke\u2019s<strong> Kaelyn Gridley<\/strong> took the second seed in 1:08.69, just ahead of pro <strong>Miranda Tucker<\/strong> (1:09.00).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men\u2019s 100 Breaststroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2019s <strong>Aleksas Savickas<\/strong> took the top seed in the men\u2019s breaststroke , finishing in 1:00.55.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee\u2019s<strong> Lyubomir Epitropov<\/strong> took the second spot in 1:01.56 followed by <strong>Reid Mikuta<\/strong> (1:01.80).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>US Open: Women\u2019s 100 Backstroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Regan Smith is in pursuit of a double title tonight and took her second top seed of the day in the 100 backstroke. Smith got to the wall in 59.65, about a second ahead of NC State\u2019s<strong> Katharine Berkoff<\/strong> (59.64).<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee\u2019s<strong> Josephine Fuller<\/strong> took the third seed in 1:00.94.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men\u2019s 100 Backstroke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel Diehl<\/strong> claimed the top seed in the 100 backstroke at 53.11, the only swimmer to break 54.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Evangelos Makrygiannis<\/strong> took the second seed in 54.53, followed by Notre Dame\u2019s<strong> Tommy Janton<\/strong> (55.17).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2022\/toyota-u-s-open-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Results<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2022 US Open continued on Friday with Day 3 from Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
