Golden Girl Ariarne Titmus Returns To Racing At Queensland Championships<\/strong><\/p>\n

Australia’s dual Olympic and world champion and the newly crowned 2022 Swimming World<\/em> female Swimmer of the Year<\/a>,\u00a0 Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> will make her racing return with a full book of freestyle events\u00a0 at this month\u2019s 2022 Queensland State Championships.<\/p>\n

From Tokyo heroes to Birmingham Commonwealth Games gold medallists to the next generation of Queensland stars to international visitors led by an 86-strong group from New Zealand the Queensland States will start just days before the world congregates in Melbourne for the FINA World Short Course Championships.<\/p>\n

Twenty-two year-old two-time Tokyo champion Titmus, who added four gold to her tally of seven gold at this year\u2019s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, will swim every freestyle event from 50m through 1500m and three club relays when the titles run from December 10-16 at Chandler\u2019s Brisbane Aquatic Centre.<\/p>\n

The girl from St Peters Western (SPW) will then swap her Speedos for the microphone when she joins a long line of swimmers to turn their talents to television – following in the footsteps of her father Steve Titmus –<\/strong> a noted Queensland news host and TV journalist with the Australian Olympic and Paralympic network Channel 7.<\/p>\n

Titmus will hardly have time to dry off before scooting to Melbourne to join fellow Olympic and world champions Ian Thorpe<\/strong> and Giaan Rooney<\/strong> for her TV debut on the Channel Nine’s Wide World Of Sports commentary team for the FINA<\/a> World Short Course Championships (December 13-18).<\/p>\n

In the pool Titmus will join her Australian team mates at St Peters Western Kiah Melverton<\/strong> and Shayna Jack<\/strong> in the 1500m \u2013 a squad challenge Head Coach Dean Boxall<\/strong> puts on his troops every year.<\/p>\n

Melverton, who with Titmus, Madi Wilson <\/strong>and Mollie O\u2019Callaghan <\/strong>formed\u00a0 that 4×200 world record-breaking team in Birmingham, will have the busiest program of the elite swimmers at the meet.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old Melverton, thriving in the SPW training environment, has entered 13 individual events and three relays \u2013 her individual program alongside Titmus in the 50, 100, 200,400, 800 and 1500m freestyle as well as 50, 100 and 200m breaststroke; 50, 100 and 200m butterfly and the 200 and 400IMs.<\/p>\n

Jack will add the 50, 100 and 200m freestyle to her 1500m journey as well as the 50m butterfly and backstroke.<\/p>\n

And while Titmus, Melverton and Jack will join the throng of what is always a popular Queensland States \u2013 Wilson and O\u2019Callaghan will take up intricate places on the Australian Dolphins team at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC).<\/p>\n

The Queensland Championships will also feature SPW’s other World and Commonwealth Games 400m freestyle gold medallist Elijah Winnington<\/strong> – who like the girls in his squad will line up in the 1500m as well as the 100, 200, 400 and 800m.<\/p>\n

Other members of Australia\u2019s highly successful Commonwealth Games team gold medallists Sam Short<\/strong> (Rackley),who won the 1500m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle and his fellow dual relay gold medallist Zac Incerti<\/strong> (USC Spartans) who has moved to Queensland to re-connect with former coach Mick Palfrey<\/strong> after leaving WA for SA and coach Peter Bishop <\/strong>will also target the meet.<\/p>\n

They will be joined by Birmingham team mates, Cody Simpson, Bowen Gough<\/strong> and Josh Edwards-Smith<\/strong> (Griffith University), as well as Somerset freestyle sprinters, Grayson Bell<\/strong> and Thomas Nowakowski<\/strong> dual Olympian Brianna Throssell<\/strong> who has moved from USC Spartans for SPW.<\/p>\n

Olympian and former World record holder Matt Wilson<\/strong> and relay gold medal freestyle gold medallist Will Yang <\/strong>\u2013 are both part of the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic team (SOPAC)who will make the trek north of the border.<\/p>\n

The NZ Aquablacks group will be spearheaded by World Championship bronze medallist and Commonwealth champion Lewis Clareburt<\/strong> and team mates Andrew Jeffcoat, Michael Pickett<\/strong> and Zac Reid.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Also lining up in the Queensland Championships will be triple Olympian Cam McEvoy <\/strong>(Somerville House) who is back in Queensland after a stint in Sydney, where he swam the Australian Short Course with Manly SC, will line up in his specialist 50 and 100m freestyle events \u2013 events that will also feature sons of two former great Queenslanders \u2013 Will Stockwell <\/strong>\u2013 son of Olympic greats Mark Stockwell<\/strong> and Tracy Caulkins<\/strong> and Kai Taylor<\/strong> \u2013 son of triple Olympian Hayley Lewis.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Taylor, 19, is in Tokyo with the Queensland Development Team contesting the Japan Open where he has already won the B final in the 100m freestyle on night one in 49.48 \u2013 a time that would have seen him finish fifth in the A final.<\/p>\n

And Kai backed up on night two to finish fourth in the 200m freestyle in a new pb of 1:47.83 with his SPW team mate Josh Staples<\/strong> eighth in 1:51.92.<\/p>\n

The women’s 100m backstroke saw SPW pair Hannah Fredericks<\/strong> (1.01:3) and Jaclyn Barclay<\/strong> (1:01.45) finish fourth and fifth respectively while Sunshine Coast Grammar’s Lucy Dring<\/strong> finished fifth in the 200m freestyle final in 1:59.82<\/p>\n

Swimming Queensland has a team of 24 swimmers and seven coaches who have already contested the Japan Invitational and will return home after the Japan Open to contest the Queensland Championships \u2013 all part of Head Coach Drew McGregor<\/strong>\u2019s plan to take the next generation out of their comfort zone and subject the team to a series of meets while managing the pressures of travel and racing.<\/p>\n

Other Queensland youngsters to feature on day one were 18-year-old Jacqueline Davison-McGovern<\/strong> (Yeronga Park) with a personal best of 4:13.18 to finish fifth in the A final of the women\u2019s 400m freestyle; Lily Price<\/strong> (Rackley) third in the B final of the 50m butterfly in 26.86 and Amelia Weber<\/strong> (St Peters Western) who won the 400m freestyle B final in 4:15.10.<\/p>\n
