The Longhorn and Golden Bear men kicked off the meet with one relay win each while the Texas women swept their two events Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Texas swam the top time in the country in the men&#8217;s 800 freestyle relay, with <strong>Luke Hobson<\/strong> (1:32.73),\u00a0<strong>Peter Larson<\/strong> (1:32.78),\u00a0<strong>Coby Carrozza<\/strong> (1:32.53) and <strong>Carson Foster <\/strong>(1:30.75) teaming up for a final time of 6:08.79. That edged out the 6:08.97 that Arizona State swam earlier this month for the nation&#8217;s top mark so far this season.<\/p>\n<p>The Longhorns were well short of the American, NCAA and U.S. Open record of 6:03.89 that they swam at last season&#8217;s NCAA Championships, but they are still the top team in the country in this event, even with individual 200 free NCAA champion <strong>Drew Kibler<\/strong> having graduated. Of course, it helps having two swimmers on the squad who helped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-u-s-ends-800-free-relay-drought-with-dominant-swim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the U.S. men win gold in the 800-meter free relay at this summer&#8217;s World Championships<\/a> (Foster in the final and Carrozza in prelims) plus a third who captured the win in the 200-meter free at U.S. Nationals in July (Hobson).<\/p>\n<p>Cal&#8217;s team of\u00a0<strong>Patrick Callan<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Gabriel Jett<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Robin Hanson<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Destin Lasco<\/strong> placed second in 6:10.35, good for No. 3 in the national rankings, while Lasco nearly matched Foster with a scintillating 1:30.79 anchor split. For some comparison, only seven swimmers split 1:30 or better at last year&#8217;s NCAAs, including no Cal swimmers. Meanwhile,\u00a0Minnesota&#8217;s team of\u00a0<strong>Chris Morris<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Bar Soloveychik<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kaiser Neverman<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Alberto Hernanrcia<\/strong> placed third in 6:16.25.<\/p>\n<p>The Cal men just missed swimming the top time in the country in the 200 medley relay. The team of\u00a0<strong>Bjorn Seeliger<\/strong> (20.73), <strong>Liam Bell<\/strong> (23.20),\u00a0<strong>Dare Rose<\/strong> (20.05) and\u00a0<strong>Jack Alexy<\/strong> (18.85) swam a mark of 1:22.84, just off the 1:22.82 that Florida swam at the Georgia Invite two weeks ago. Texas placed second but more than a second behind the Golden Bears. The team of Foster, <strong>Will Chan<\/strong>, <strong>Cole Crane<\/strong> and <strong>Daniel Krueger<\/strong> finished in 1:24.16, while Arizona&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Billy Oates<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ryan Foote<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Seth Miller<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Marin Ercegovic<\/strong> took third in 1:24.94.<\/p>\n<p>Texas placed second in this event at the NCAA Championships last year, but this was a completely new foursome from last year. The only member of the group from March 2022 still competing for the Longhorns is breaststroke specialist <strong>Caspar Corbeau<\/strong>, but he is missing the Minnesota meet as he is scheduled to race at the Short Course World Championships beginning in less than two weeks. Texas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/carson-foster-caspar-corbeau-lead-texas-to-narrow-win-over-virginia-in-combined-dual-meet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has already recorded a time of 1:23.83 this season at a dual meet against Virginia<\/a> with Corbeau swimming butterfly alongside Foster, Chan and Krueger.<\/p>\n<p>On the women&#8217;s side, the Longhorns&#8217; team of\u00a0<strong>Olivia Bray<\/strong> (23.79),\u00a0<strong>Anna Elendt<\/strong> (26.49),\u00a0<strong>Emma Sticklen<\/strong> (22.70) and <strong>Grace Cooper <\/strong>(21.48) clocked 1:34.46 for a one-second win. That time ranks third nationally, just a tenth behind marks posted by Virginia and NC State two weeks ago, and it exactly matched Texas&#8217; fifth-place mark in the event from last year&#8217;s NCAA Championships (with Bray, Elendt and Sticklen all returning, although with Bray and Sticklen racing different strokes).<\/p>\n<p>Cal placed second in 1:35.62, a time good for No. 7 nationally.\u00a0<strong>Isabelle Stadden<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jade Neser<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mckenna Stone<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Emily Gantriis<\/strong> raced for the Bears. Texas&#8217; &#8220;B&#8221; team of\u00a0<strong>Meghan DiMartile<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lydia Jacoby<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kelly Pash<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Bridget Semenuk<\/strong> took third in 1:36.66.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas women also won the 800 free relay with\u00a0<strong>Kyla Leibel<\/strong> (1:44.75), Pash (1:43.45),\u00a0<strong>Erica Sullivan<\/strong> (1:45.47) and Sticklen (1:46.00) combining for a mark of 6:59.67, making the Longhorns just the second team after Stanford to crack the 7:00 barrier this season.
