{"id":516854,"date":"2022-11-26T19:40:52","date_gmt":"2022-11-27T02:40:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=516854"},"modified":"2024-10-28T10:46:16","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T17:46:16","slug":"kyle-chalmers-out-to-break-20-year-swimming-hoodoo-at-fina-world-short-course-championships-in-melbourne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kyle-chalmers-out-to-break-20-year-swimming-hoodoo-at-fina-world-short-course-championships-in-melbourne\/","title":{"rendered":"Kyle Chalmers Looking To Add Another Piece To Career-Title Puzzle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kyle Chalmers Out To Break 20-Year Swimming Hoodoo At Fina World Short Course Championships In Melbourne<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> will be hoping to break a 20-year Australian swimming hoodoo when he lines up in the 100m freestyle at next month\u2019s Fina World Short Course Championships in Melbourne (December 13-16).<\/p>\n<p>It was 20 years ago this year that <strong>Ashley Callus<\/strong> became the first and only Australian to win the blue ribband event at the World SC titles in Moscow in 2002 \u2013 beating Argentina\u2019s <strong>Jose Meolans<\/strong> and Algeria\u2019s <strong>Salim Isles.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Klim, <\/strong>who along with Callus<strong>, Chris Fydler <\/strong>and <strong>Ian Thorpe <\/strong>combined to win the 4x100m freestyle relay at the Sydney Olympics, won bronze in 1997 in Gottenburg and silver in 1999 in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tommaso D\u2019Dorsogna <\/strong>followed with silver in 2012 in Istanbul and bronze in Windsor in 2016 &#8211; but gold has eluded the Dolphins, with Chalmers in the prime of his career and up for the challenge<\/p>\n<p>The reigning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kyle-chalmers-blasts-world-record-in-scm-100-freestyle-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world record holder in the short course 100m freestyle<\/a> with his 44.84 swum in Russia last year, has set himself to win both the long and short course titles before he retires.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 100 freestyle is my baby and something I have achieved so much in over the years,\u201d Chalmers has told the Sydney Morning Herald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been the Australian champion, the Oceania champion, the junior world champion, the Commonwealth champion, the Olympic champion &#8230; but there are two more things I want to achieve, which is the world short-course championship and then the [long-course] world championship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have two big boxes I want to tick so I can retire happily. So, I get the opportunity to tick one of those boxes off in front of a home crowd, and to have my family up in the crowd will mean the world to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chalmers said it\u2019s been a year of growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, come Paris [Olympics] I will be completely bulletproof after going through something like this year. I feel like I have ticked every box of what challenges can come at me, and I know I will be able to deal with them better going forward,\u201d said Chalmers who will face off against Romanian teenage sensation, long course world record holder, <strong>David Popovici<\/strong> in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>Chalmers will spearhead an Australian team chockfull of stars bound for in Melbourne next month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, I would always win races by being the fittest or the strongest or the fastest kind of person in the race,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut now I am able to win races because my skills are a whole lot better than what they used to be, and they\u2019re right up there with the best in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is something I pride myself on now, my dive and my turns and my underwater fly kicks.
