In a recent interview published by The Guardian, Thorpe \u2013 a longtime LGBTQ advocate \u2013 indicated that he felt the world governing body\u2019s rules for transgender eligibility were incorrect.<\/p>\n<p>In June, during an Extraordinary General Congress in Budapest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-vote-on-transgender-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FINA declared that male-to-female transgender athletes<\/a> may only compete in FINA competitions and set FINA world records in the female category if they have not experienced any part of male puberty. FINA\u2019s decision to institute guidelines was largely connected to <strong>Lia Thomas<\/strong> racing and winning a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-title-for-lia-thomas-is-joke-with-biological-women-as-punchline-hardly-a-laughing-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">woman\u2019s NCAA title<\/a> for the University of Pennsylvania following three years as a member of the men\u2019s squad.<\/p>\n<p>Thorpe discussed FINA\u2019s decision in regards to its impact on transgender individuals and their \u201cmarginalized\u201d position rather than the impact on fairness in women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a very complicated issue, I can\u2019t deny that, and I am personally opposed to the position FINA has taken on this,\u201d Thorpe said. \u201cI am for fairness in sport, but I\u2019m also for equality in sport. And in this instance, they\u2019ve actually got it wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thorpe\u2019s position runs counter to that of many in the sport, including fellow Olympic champion <strong>Nancy Hogshead-Makar<\/strong>, the CEO of Champion Women. Hogshead-Makar has long been an advocate for transgender participation in a separate category, but not of transgender women in the women\u2019s category due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nancy-hogshead-makar-explains-problems-with-lia-thomas-situation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">benefits reaped from male puberty<\/a> \u2013 such as strength, height and lung capacity.<\/p>\n<p><a
