But as Texas coaches\u00a0<strong>Eddie Reese\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Carol Capitani<\/strong> explained, this meet will be held with a twist as the women and men&#8217;s teams are scored together Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>Reese, the 81-year-old coach who has captured 15 national titles and always has a quick wit, said of the format, &#8220;Don&#8217;t believe it&#8217;s ever been done in a dual meet situation.&#8221; Reese added, &#8220;We&#8217;re trying to make a little more excitement for the crowd and get more people to watch swimming instead of just watching it during the Olympics on TV sets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no surprise that Texas and Virginia, led by sixth-year head coach <strong>Todd DeSorbo<\/strong>, would want to schedule a dual meet between the two programs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We just try to use our dual meets as an opportunity to learn. They&#8217;re a really good team, and we&#8217;re a really good team,&#8221; Capitani said. &#8220;I think it will be a good opportunity to get up. They have some superstars, but we have some superstars, too. Getting up and seeing where we are at this time in the season I think is really important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the Virginia women are bringing a trio of individual NCAA champions from last year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-alex-walsh-dominates-200-im-final-with-blistering-207-13-leah-hayes-sets-world-junior-record-for-bronze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kate-douglass-builds-legacy-as-one-of-greatest-college-swimmers-in-history-after-unprecedented-3-american-records-in-3-different-strokes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/dual-meet-speed-puts-gretchen-walsh-in-range-of-special-sophomore-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong><\/a>, to town, while Texas&#8217; highest-profile women are breaststrokers\u00a0<strong>Anna Elendt<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Lydia Jacoby<\/strong>, distance freestyle Olympian <strong>Erica Sullivan<\/strong> and versatile senior\u00a0<strong>Kelly Pash<\/strong>. On the men&#8217;s side, a group led by 200 and 400 IM World Championships silver medalist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/how-carson-foster-is-fulfilling-potential-as-next-american-medley-star\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Carson Foster<\/strong><\/a>, breaststroker\u00a0<strong>Caspar Corbeau<\/strong> and a stable of middle-distance swimmers will get a test from a Virginia squad with emerging names like\u00a0<strong>Matt King<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Jack Aikins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s going to be a real test for us, and I really like that,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/texassports.com\/news\/2022\/10\/31\/mens-swimming-and-diving-video-eddie-reese-media-availability.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reese said<\/a>. &#8220;A lot of times, we aren&#8217;t really tested this time of the year, and this is going to be great for us. I hate the word &#8216;step up.&#8217; We&#8217;re going to find out how good we are now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But Friday night&#8217;s session won&#8217;t be a normal dual meet. The Texas assistant coaches, <strong>Wyatt Collins<\/strong> (men&#8217;s) and <strong>Mitch Dalton <\/strong>(women&#8217;s) came up with the idea for the combined dual meet, and the setup will include a light show and swimmer introductions that Capitani compared to an ISL meet. The Texas mascot &#8220;Bevo&#8221; will be in attendance at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Each team will race women and men together in a mixed 400 freestyle relay. When the teams race again Saturday morning, the normal split-up scoring of women and men will return.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will be fun to see how many people get up and support swimming,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/texassports.com\/news\/2022\/10\/31\/womens-swimming-and-diving-video-carol-capitani-media-availability.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Capitani said<\/a>. &#8220;A lot of people don&#8217;t go to swimming because it&#8217;s not very fun. It&#8217;s fun if you know swimming, but it&#8217;s not fun if you don&#8217;t normally go to swimming. We want to make this fan-friendly. If we have to take a hit on the swimming side because it&#8217;s not perfectly set up, that&#8217;s alright.
