TEMPE, Ariz., March 18. THE No. 19 Arizona State women's water polo team got off to a fast start Tuesday against No. 13 Indiana but could not hold the lead as the Hoosiers tallied six goals in the final half of the game to win 8-5 and hand the Sun Devils their second loss in a row. <\/p>\n
ASU (12-9) and IU (17-6), which each had to contend with a stiff breeze whipping through the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center throughout the game, combined to see nine different players score in the contest.<\/p>\n
The Sun Devils jumped ahead early with Tessa Wyborny (Fr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) scoring less than two minutes into the game. A few minutes later, Daya Mau (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) capitalized on a 4 meter penalty shot to push the advantage to 2-0. <\/p>\n
IU's Ginger Wang responded with a goal of her own to open the second with Heather Rempfer (Fr., Lodi, Calif.) answering back moments later to reestablish a two-goal ASU lead. With 10 seconds remaining in the
\nhalf, Kristin Stanford scored the first of her four goals to bring the Hoosiers to within one at 3-2.<\/p>\n
The second half started with the Hoosiers blitzing the Sun Devils for a pair of goals, one from Krista Peterson and the other from Stanford, before Adriane Mota (Fr., Long Beach, Calif.) brought the score even at four. IU, however, scored 14 seconds later to reclaim the lead for the second time.<\/p>\n
In the fourth quarter, Gili Kollan (So., Kiriat Bialik, Israel) unleashed a backhand shot from the right of the goal and tied the match at five. But the Hoosiers stormed back again as Stanford was in the right place at the right time, collecting a rebound off the cross bar and slamming in her third goal. <\/p>\n
Forty seconds later, Emily Schmitt stole an errant Sun Devil pass and swam the length of the pool to score and give IU a two-goal cushion. Stanford added her
\nfourth as she pressed for a rebound that trickled into the goal as three players fought for control of the loose ball.<\/p>\n
Kollan, Katie Davis (Jr., Riverside, Calif.) and Wyborny each assisted on one goal in the game as the Sun Devils lost their first game of the year in which they held the lead going into the start of the third quarter. With a goal and an assist, Kollan pushed her
\nscoring streak to nine games in a row, tying for the longest on the year.<\/p>\n
ASU returns to the road again this weekend with four games at the Claremont (Calif.) Colleges Tournament. The Sun Devils will face Occidental, Santa Clara, Harvard and Claremont-Mudd Scripps in the two-day event.<\/p>\n
