The four-time Olympic medallist announced last month he would be moving to Frankfurt, Germany, to join up with the former South Africa head coach.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a chance for the 30-year-old to start anew following a difficult time in the water where results haven\u2019t been anywhere close to what he desired and anticipated.<\/p>\n
There was a combination of the lack of a consistent training base, the legacy of the lockdown in South Africa amid the pandemic and regular illness.<\/p>\n
Amidst all that was the \u201ctraumatic experience\u201d<\/a> in January 2021 that led to depression and therapy and a feeling of desolation at Tokyo 2020.<\/p>\n In July 2022, Le Clos experienced the low point of his career so far when he finished fourth in the 100 fly at the Commonwealth Games<\/strong>, an outcome that he was at a loss to explain.<\/p>\n Now though, he is embracing the opportunity to reset with ex-Germany swim coach Lange and look towards Paris 2024 while silencing the doubters.<\/p>\n He told Swimming World:<\/p>\n \u201cAt the end of the day, swimming with Dirk is exactly what I need.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve known Dirk for a long time, I know how he works, I respect him a hell of a lot, he is not strict but a firm coach who is going to take me to where I need to be with that set-up.<\/p>\n \u201cI can\u2019t wait to get going. I know I\u2019m going to be successful \u2013 I don\u2019t know when it\u2019s going to be \u2013 I hope it\u2019s the end of the year, I hope we can get it back. I know it\u2019s coming, it\u2019s definitely coming.<\/p>\n \u201cAt Commonwealths I was so disappointed because I really thought this was going to be my big break again because everyone has written me off in world swimming \u2013 I know that, I hear what people are saying.<\/p>\n \u201cBut they are going to be reminded very soon that they are making a huge mistake to write me off, everyone. So good luck to them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Chad Le Clos: Photo Courtesy: Gian Mattia D’Alberto – LaPresse<\/p><\/div>\n Rewind to 2020 and Le Clos was \u201craring to go\u201d to Tokyo and add to the one gold and three silvers he won at London 2012 and Rio 2016.<\/p>\n However, Covid-19 had already begun its long, deadly march across the world and after Le Clos returned to South Africa, he was unable to swim for four months and it was October before he could travel.<\/p>\n He competed at the ISL, improving with each round, and enjoyed a good end to the year before his world was rocked in January 2021 by the experience, the nature of which he has vowed never to disclose.<\/p>\n The four-time world champion trained alone until May of that year when he reunited with James Gibson<\/strong> and went to the Olympics hoping he could sneak a bronze.<\/p>\n Le Clos \u2013 who won a famous 200 fly gold in 2012 when he overhauled Michael Phelps<\/strong> at the death \u2013 was fifth over four lengths but didn\u2019t negotiate the heats of the 100 in which he had won silver at the previous two Games.<\/p>\n Such was the ongoing trauma following the January event, Le Clos felt nothing when he walked out on poolside in the Japanese capital.<\/p>\n Come the World Short-Course Championships<\/strong> in Abu Dhabi in December and he was so low that his father urged him to leave and return to South Africa<\/a>.<\/p>\n It was only the prospect of closing in on Ryan Lochte<\/strong>\u2019s short-course record haul that convinced Le Clos to stay and he came away with a silver and bronze.<\/p>\n On into 2022 and an intense block of training ahead of the World Championships<\/strong> in Budapest had him eyeing a medal in the Hungarian capital with the Commonwealth Games<\/strong> the main focus.<\/p>\n However, he started experiencing breathing difficulties about 10 days before worlds, something he describes as like having \u201ca belt around your waist \u2013 every time you breathe it squeezes a little tighter\u201d.<\/p>\n Le Clos finished 33rd<\/sup> in the 50 but that was the end of his competition, a test showing he only had 65% lung function.<\/p>\n On to Birmingham, England, for the Commonwealths where he was looking to claim his fourth straight 200 fly title.<\/p>\n Le Clos was leading all the way until a furious last few metres from Lewis Clareburt<\/strong> saw the New Zealander take gold.<\/a><\/p>\n He was devastated not to have won and could not explain his time of 1:55.89 having expected to have at least gone low 1:54 or even 1:53.<\/p>\n \u201cThe 2 fly \u2013 let\u2019s just say it how it was right \u2013 it was very, very slow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cI got beaten by the better man absolutely \u2013 I just don\u2019t really understand why I wasn\u2019t able to swim fast.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought the stars would have aligned for me, my 10-year anniversary (of beating Phelps at London 2012), lane five too!<\/p>\n \u201cI expected a hell of a lot more after heats. For some reason I can\u2019t finish that last 50, I don\u2019t know why.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Worse was to come when he was locked out of the podium by one place in the 100 fly<\/a>, the nadir of his career thus far, as he mused:<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a frustrating time to be me.<\/p>\n \u201cThe 100 fly was a low point in my career.<\/p>\n \u201cI was so confident I was going to win that race comfortably and I get there and I\u2019m swimming with too much emotion. I\u2019m not nervous, I\u2019m not afraid, I\u2019m comfortable, I feel like I\u2019m swimming like a desperate man \u2013 you know, \u2018you have to win\u2019.<\/p>\n \u201cMaybe that\u2019s what\u2019s happening to me: I\u2019ve lost two to three years, I am so frustrated. I am spinning myself into a tizzle.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was just really a sad performance \u2013 especially the 100 fly. I was like wow \u2013 I was as disappointed as can be in the 100. Couldn\u2019t believe it.<\/p>\n \u201cSo to get that composure back \u2013 it\u2019s going to come. At the end of the day, the good thing about sports is that you always have another opportunity.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Chad Le Clos: Photo Courtesy: Gian Mattia D’Alberto – LaPresse<\/p><\/div>\n According to Le Clos, he and Lange share the same ideas and mindset.<\/p>\n There will be more structure to a training regime that has seen him travel between Turkey, Britain and Hungary in recent years, a few tweaks and changes here and there and a recognition that at 30 he needs more recovery.<\/p>\n That echoes Le Clos\u2019 father Bert\u2019s observation that his son is like a Ferrari without any oil, a top-of-the-range car that needs a service.<\/p>\n Passport issues appeared to have scuppered his chances of competing at the Berlin leg of the FINA<\/a> World Cup<\/strong> although he may well travel to the Canada and USA stops.<\/p>\n The World Short-Course Championships<\/strong> in Melbourne beckon in December and then on to Fukuoka worlds next year and eventually Paris 2024.<\/p>\n He\u2019ll definitely continue the 100 and 200 fly and there\u2019s also the possibility of the free.<\/p>\n Whatever he does, Le Clos has no doubt in his ability to be among the mix for the medals but \u00a0fulfilling his potential and doing what he\u2019s capable of is what will drive him over the next couple of years.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m not going there to make up the numbers, not going there to make the final.<\/p>\n This year, next year, Paris \u2013 I\u2019m coming in to try and win medals at least. I don\u2019t know what happens in life: I could break my leg tomorrow, maybe the big boss upstairs tells me you\u2019re dying at 30, this is as far as you\u2019re going to get.<\/p>\n \u201cI know I\u2019m going to be in the best shape that I can be and whatever that result is, I can live with that result after I\u2019ve done proper training.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n While Le Clos has endured a turbulent time of late, a host of young male swimmers have emerged.<\/p>\n David Popovici<\/strong> this year rewrote the history books as did Kristof Milak<\/strong> \u2013 once more \u2013 and Thomas Ceccon<\/strong> while Leon Marchand<\/strong> rattled Phelps\u2019 400IM world record.<\/p>\n Le Clos said: \u201cUnbelievable. I am a fan of the sport. Whether I retire tomorrow I will be a fan of these guys and I\u2019ll support these boys all the way.\u201d<\/p>\n Chad Le Clos: Photo Courtesy: Gian Mattia D’Alberto – LaPresse<\/p><\/div>\n Popovici lowered the 100 free WR to 46.86<\/a> and became the third-swiftest over 200 behind only Paul Biedermann<\/strong> (1:42.00) and Phelps (1:42.96) when he went 1:42.97, also a textile world record<\/a>.<\/p>\n Should Le Clos do the freestyle, the young Romanian would await, something Le Clos welcomes as a thread running through his career.<\/p>\n \u201cIf I am going to choose to swim the 100 free, I am going to try and be the best I can be, I have no fear for any man.<\/p>\n \u201cThat is how I have always been.<\/p>\n \u201cI told my dad before 2012 I was going to get Phelps eventually, you know what I\u2019m saying?<\/p>\n \u201cI knew when I raced Phelps I was going in there trying to win; he was my icon, I loved the guy, I worshipped the guy. Bottom line, I was coming there to win.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s why I swim the way I swim: I go out hard like a madman and hope I\u2019ll scare them all and they won\u2019t come back, I try and win.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s as simple as that: I don\u2019t shy away from these challenges, I don\u2019t hide from these people. When the big guys come out to play I go for them in those races.<\/p>\n \u201cI go for Kyle Chalmers in the 100 free at 2018 Commonwealth Games \u2013 Olympic champion.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen Ben Proud got DQd (in the 50 fly) in 2018 I was the first to say I was not the Commonwealth champion.
