She was honored alongside gymnast <strong>Sunisa Lee<\/strong> and bobsledder <strong>Elana Meyers Taylor,<\/strong> along with basketball coach <strong>Dawn Staley<\/strong> and <strong>Alexis Ohanian,<\/strong> the husband of <strong>Serena Williams<\/strong> and the lead founding investor of Angel City Football Club in the NWSL.<\/p>\n<p>Lee won the Sportswoman of the Year Award in the individual sports category. Meyers Taylor won the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award. Staley earned the Billie Jean King Leadership Award, and Ohanian was given the Champion for Equality Award.<\/p>\n<p>Steffens is one of the most accomplished water polo players in the world. She\u2019s won the last three Olympic gold medals with the U.S. women\u2019s powerhouse, being named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament in both the 2012 and 2016 Games. She\u2019s the all-time leading scorer in Olympic women\u2019s water polo history with 56 goals.<\/p>\n<p>Steffens has also won four FINA World Championships gold medals and three NCAA titles with Stanford University. For all the success that the American women have had, she lamented that the team hasn\u2019t experienced, \u201cthat \u201899 World Cup moment,\u201d referencing the U.S. women\u2019s soccer team that catalyzed widespread support for the game by winning the World Cup in the United States that year. Steffens, 29, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/maggie-steffens-tony-azevedo-6-8-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has launched 6-8 Sports<\/a>, a data analytics company with fellow water polo Olympian <strong>Tony Azevedo,<\/strong> aiming to bring attention and open new avenues for developing sports like water polo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you develop in the sport, and I\u2019ve been around it for so long, being a leader, being a veteran, my goals are so much more big-picture,\u201d Steffens said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/lifestyle\/sports\/water-polo-olympic-champion-steffens-calls-greater-us-team-recognition-2022-10-13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in an interview with Reuters<\/a>. \u201cHow do these women get more opportunities than I had?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Women\u2019s Sports Foundation was founded in 1974 by <strong>Billie Jean King<\/strong> to be \u201can ally, an advocate and a catalyst\u201d for participation in and recognition of women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Women\u2019s Sports Foundation is a guardian angel and champion of Title IX, and fully understands and accepts its decades long mission to ensure true equity for girls and women,\u201d King said in a press release. \u201cI am inspired by this remarkable group of honorees who are
