LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania, March 15. THE Hershey Lady Trojans defended their team title, and the La Salle College Explorers earned their third consecutive victory at the Pennsylvania 3A High School Swimming Championships March 12-13 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.<\/p>\n

Girls<\/strong>
\nThere was plenty of excitement during the girls portion of the competition, and it started with the very first event–the 200 medley relay. Hershey and North Allegheny’s squads dueled to a 1:42.09-1:42.10 finish. Hershey’s squad of senior Meaghan Raab, junior Vivi Tafuto, senior Gabi Broschard and sophomore Colette Robinson took down the team’s 1:44.12 record from last year. North Allegheny’s team consisted of juniors Jacquelyn Du, Kayla Churman and Morgan Soulia, with sophomore Erin Kuhn swimming second.<\/p>\n

Raab, who is headed to the University of Georgia to continue her swimming career in the fall, set individual state records with her 1:57.13 in the 200 IM and 53.08 in the 100 back. She erased Emily Cameron’s 1:57.44 from 2011 in the 200 IM and Christina Leander’s 53.70 set last year in the 100 back.<\/p>\n

Hershey’s 400 free relay squad of Kaley Buchanan (freshman), Tafuto, Madelyn Veith (senior) and Raab ended the meet with a state record 3:21.34, taking down the 3:22.35 the team set last year. The Lady Trojans completed the relay sweep with their 1:33.81 in the 200 free relay with Buchanan, senior Jenny Young, Robinson and Veith.<\/p>\n

Veith scored victories in both the 50 and 100 free by a grand total of 4-hundredths of a second. She defeated Parkland sophomore Siena Savaggio in the 100 free, 50.45 to 50.46, and touched just ahead of Mt. Lebanon senior Katie Ford, 23.13 to 23.16. Veith has committed to Princeton next year.<\/p>\n

Salvaggio also came in second in the 200 free to Council Rock North senior Tommie Dillione, 1:49.44 to 1:49.48. Dillione will be attending Penn State next year. Another future Nittany Lion, Northeastern’s Niki Price, earned her victory in the 100 fly (54.61).<\/p>\n

Sabrina Mortell, a senior at Cumberland Valley who will be at Army next year, claimed the 500 free with her 4:52.55. Tafuto took charge in the 100 breast in 1:01.81.<\/p>\n

Hershey successfully defended their team title with 279 points, followed by North Allegheny (235), North Penn (189), Greater Latrobe (115) and Mount Lebanon (100).<\/p>\n

Boys<\/strong>
\nAs in the girls competition, the La Salle College Explorers set a state record in the first event. The team of junior Kyle Shumur, senior Michael McBryan, sophomore Greg Brocato and junior Nick Stachel combined for a 1:30.26 in the 200 medley relay, bettering Upper Dublin’s 1:31.28 state mark from last year. Stachel joined junior Vince Everman, freshman Jake Sannem and junior Kyle McElwee for a winning 1:23.12 in the 200 free relay.<\/p>\n

Ryan Dudzinski, a junior at Upper St. Clair, set the only boys individual state standard with his 47.44 in the 100 fly. That took out Andrew Kosic’s 2001 mark of 47.68. Dudzinski anchored Upper St. Clair’s victorious 400 free relay of senior Alex Hardwick plus juniors Patrick Lerch and Fynn Minuth, in 3:03.04.<\/p>\n

Upper Dublin’s Zachary Buerger closed out his high school career with victories in both the 200 IM (1:45.64) and 500 free (4:22.75). Buerger will be attending Princeton next year.<\/p>\n

W.C. Henderson senior Thomas McCormick, who has committed to West Chester, dueled La Salle College’s McBryan to an exciting 54.92-54.97 victory in the 100 breast. Another thrilling race came in the 50 free, with Bangor senior Zach Kantz touching out Council Rock senior Brandon McCredie to a 20.54-20.58 finish.<\/p>\n

Christopher Devlin, a senior at Upper Dublin, earned a 1:39.22 first-place finish in the 200 free. He won’t have to go very far to college in the fall–he will be attending Bucknell, site of the championship meet.<\/p>\n

Kevin Musterait, a Souderton senior, triumphed in the 100 free with his 43.94. Hatbor-Horsham junior Michael Thomas was tops in the 100 back (46.65).<\/p>\n

La Salle College earned 250 points for their championship, with North Allegheny second (202), Upper St. Clair third (192.5), Hershey fourth (152) and Upper Dublin fifth (128).<\/p>\n
