{"id":514030,"date":"2022-10-06T10:40:49","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T17:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=514030"},"modified":"2022-10-06T10:40:49","modified_gmt":"2022-10-06T17:40:49","slug":"fina-president-husain-al-musallam-in-line-for-olympic-council-of-asia-presidency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-president-husain-al-musallam-in-line-for-olympic-council-of-asia-presidency\/","title":{"rendered":"FINA President Husain Al-Musallam in Line for Olympic Council of Asia Presidency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>FINA President Husain Al-Musallam in Line for Olympic Council of Asia Presidency<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>FINA president <strong>Husain Al-Musallam<\/strong> has been proposed as a candidate to become the head of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) if the current head\u2019s fraud conviction remains in place.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Musallam was put forward as a candidate this week at a meeting of the OCA\u2019s general assembly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidethegames.biz\/articles\/1128829\/al-musallam-proposed-as-oca-president\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports Inside The Games<\/a>. He would replace<strong> Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah<\/strong>, a fellow Kuwaiti who stepped down in September 2021 as he was found guilty of forgery.<\/p>\n<p>Sheikh Ahmad is appealing that ruling in a court in Switzerland. If the conviction is not overturned and he does the allotted prison time of 14 months, OCA will need a new leader. <strong>Randhir Singh<\/strong> of India has led the OCA on an interim basis, but the 76-year-old is not planning to stand for election.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Musallam, 62, is the OCA\u2019s director general, a role he\u2019s held since 2005. He joined the organization when it was founded in 1982 by Sheikh Ahmad\u2019s father, <strong>Sheikh Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Musallam is also the secretary general of the Kuwait Olympic Committee. Al-Musallam would hold both roles concurrently. (Former FINA president <strong>Julio Maglione,<\/strong> for instance, led FINA while serving as the president of the Pan American Sports Organization from 2015-17.)<\/p>\n<p>The OCA general assembly in 2023 will be held in Kuwait.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Musallam\u2019s close ties to Sheikh Ahmad mean he\u2019s not exactly above the fray that landed Sheikh Ahmad in trouble. Sheikh Ahmad\u2019s conviction stems from a dispute between factions within the Kuwaiti royal family. He was, however, implicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/report-fina-president-husain-al-musallam-subject-of-renewed-interest-in-u-s-corruption-probe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in investigations dating back to 2017<\/a> that branched off from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-vice-president-husain-al-musallam-connected-with-fifa-corruption-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">larger probe of corruption at FIFA<\/a> (Al-Musallam was a FINA vice president then). In addition to being he president of the Asian Handball Federation, Sheikh Ahmad was a member of the FIFA Council, an International Olympic Committee member and a reputed power broker in shepherding voting members to support, among others, current IOC president <strong>Thomas Bach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Al-Musallam was identified as a potential co-conspirator in business dealings that led to Sheikh Ahmad being investigated. Though he\u2019s been the subject of interest from international law enforcement bodies, no formal charges have been levied at Al-Musallam. He took over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/husain-al-musallam-elected-fina-president-appoints-american-brent-nowicki-as-executive-director\/\" target=\"_blank\"
