AUBURN, Ala., March 16. AUBURN senior Maggie Bowen picked up one more honor on Sunday as the Knoxville News Sentinel<\/i> named her the 2003 Southeastern Conference Women\u2019s Swimmer of the Year. <\/p>\n
AU\u2019s David Marsh also received top honors, claiming 2003 SEC Coach of the Year honors for both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s team.<\/p>\n
For Bowen, this is the third consecutive season that she has been named the SEC Swimmer of the Year by the News Sentinel<\/i>. During the SEC Championships, the Jackson, Miss., native won the 400 IM for the fourth straight year, the 200 IM for the third straight year and added the 100 breaststroke title. Only one other swimmer has equaled that feat, as Florida\u2019s Nicole Haislett won the award all four years of her career (1991-1994). <\/p>\n
Marsh has been voted the men\u2019s swimming coach of the year for the sixth time while the women\u2019s honor was his third. This is the second time that he has been named coach of the year for both squads in the same year, also accomplishing that in 1993.<\/p>\n
"As much as this award has my name on it, I have to credit Co-Head Coach Kim Brackin," Marsh said. "She certainly has invested a lot into this team and deserves as much recognition as I do for this award."<\/p>\n
The awards did not end there as the Tigers had a total of four swimmers named to the women\u2019s first-team All SEC (Bowen \u2013 IM, breast, free; Heather Kemp \u2013 free; Kirsty Coventry \u2013 back; Margaret Holezer \u2013 back), nine named to the second team (Jenni Anderson \u2013 back; Laura Swander \u2013 relay; Leslie Lunsmann \u2013 relay; Eileen Coparropa \u2013 sprint free; Hoelzer \u2013 fly; Coventry \u2013 IM, relay; Magda Dyszkiewicz \u2013 dist. free; Ashley Rubenstein \u2013 diving; Becky Short \u2013 sprint free) and one an honorable mention (Kelsey Patterson \u2013 diving).<\/p>\n
The men\u2019s side was also loaded with Tigers as five men were named First Team (George Bovell \u2013 IM; Fred Bousquet \u2013 sprint free, fly; Pat Calhoun \u2013 breast; Bryce Hunt \u2013 back; Caesar Garcia \u2013 diving), eight were named Second Team (Derek Gibb \u2013 relay; Justin Caron \u2013 relay; Ryan Wochomurka \u2013 sprint free; Matt Kidd \u2013 relay; Eric Shanteau \u2013 IM; Andy Haidinyak \u2013 fly; Mark Gangloff \u2013 breast; Jeremy Knowles \u2013 fly) and two were honorable mention (BJ Jones \u2013 dist. free, Clay Kirkland \u2013 relay).<\/p>\n
The Auburn women\u2019s team will being the defense of their national title on Thursday, March 22, as the Tigers are the hosts of the NCAA Division I Women\u2019s Swimming and Diving Championships while the men are in search of their first title in four years, which will begin on Thursday, March 27 in Austin Texas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
