{"id":513679,"date":"2022-09-30T09:35:08","date_gmt":"2022-09-30T16:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=513679"},"modified":"2022-09-30T09:35:08","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T16:35:08","slug":"longtime-yale-coach-frank-keefe-wins-2022-usa-swimming-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/longtime-yale-coach-frank-keefe-wins-2022-usa-swimming-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Longtime Yale Coach Frank Keefe Wins 2022 USA Swimming Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Longtime Yale Coach Frank Keefe Wins 2022 USA Swimming Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Frank Keefe,<\/strong> who spent more than 30 years as the head coach at Yale University, is the recipient of the 2022 USA Swimming Award.<\/p>\n<p>The award was given by USA Swimming at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/about-usas\/governance\/annual-business-meeting#usa-swimming-award\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its annual business meeting last week<\/a>. Keefe joins a long list of luminaries to receive the award, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/docs\/default-source\/mediadocuments\/media-guides\/assorted-media-documents\/2017_awards-and-honors.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">established in 1982<\/a>. It is, per the governing body\u2019s website, \u201cthe highest honor in the sport of swimming, given to the individual or organization with the most outstanding contribution to the sport of swimming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keefe has been involved in swimming for more than a half-century. Before arriving at Yale, he coached at Suburban Swim Center in Newtown Square, Penn., where his pupils included Olympic medalists <strong>Carl Robie<\/strong> and <strong>Tim McKee.<\/strong> He won 488 meets as the head coach of the Yale men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams, occupying the endowed Robert J.H. Kiphuth Director of Swimming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/robert-j-h-kiphuth-director-of-swimming-frank-keefe-to-retire-from-yale-following-2009-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">role until 2010<\/a>. (The women\u2019s team started in his second year as the men\u2019s head coach.) His name\u00a0 graces <a href=\"https:\/\/ivyleague.com\/sports\/2017\/8\/2\/x-635u7.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Frank Keefe Trophy, given to the Ivy League women\u2019s swimming and diving team champion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Keefe was an assistant coach on the U.S. Olympic team at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and the head managed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He was the head coach for Pan Am Games teams in 1975 and 1979 and an assistant for the U.S. at the 1978 World Championships. In the college realm, he continued as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/living-legend-frank-keefe-returns-to-villanova-as-volunteer-assistant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">volunteer assistant at his alma mater<\/a>, Villanova, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/former-u-s-olympic-coach-frank-keefe-joins-la-salle-coaching-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Salle near his home<\/a> outside of Philadelphia well into his 70s.<\/p>\n<p>Away from the pool deck, Keefe helped create USA Swimming in the late 1970s, differentiating the nascent body from the Amateur Athletic Union, which had governed swimming for many years (and for which Keefe was the National Time Standards Chairman from 1974-79). He served as the American Swim Coaches Association\u2019s vice president from 1976-78, its president from 1978-80 and was one the Olympic International Organizing Committee from 1973-88.
