{"id":513319,"date":"2022-09-22T18:18:01","date_gmt":"2022-09-23T01:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=513319"},"modified":"2022-09-22T18:18:01","modified_gmt":"2022-09-23T01:18:01","slug":"luke-hobson-swims-132-50-200-free-at-texas-intrasquad-breaking-kiblers-meet-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/luke-hobson-swims-132-50-200-free-at-texas-intrasquad-breaking-kiblers-meet-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Luke Hobson Swims 1:32.50 200 Free at Texas Intrasquad, Breaking Kibler&#8217;s Meet Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Luke Hobson Swims 1:32.50 200 Free at Texas Intrasquad, Breaking Kibler&#8217;s Meet Record<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Texas men&#8217;s swim team kicked off the new college season at an annual intrasquad meet. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/texas-takeoff-star-studded-longhorn-men-begin-season-with-elite-intrasquad-meet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Orange-White meet boasts an impressive collection of meet records, with Texas typically wearing racing suits at this meet and so many big names having come through the program<\/a>, and two marks went down in Thursday afternoon&#8217;s competition.<\/p>\n<p>First off,\u00a0sophomore\u00a0<strong>Luke Hobson<\/strong> took down former teammate and 2021 U.S. Olympian\u00a0<strong>Drew Kibler&#8217;s<\/strong> record in the 200 freestyle. Hobson swam a time of 1:32.50, just off his own personal-best mark of 1:32.31 from last year&#8217;s NCAA Championships, although Hobson has split 1:30.84 in an 800 free relay. The Reno, Nev., native had a breakout performance at U.S. Nationals in late July when he won the 200-meter free in 1:46.14 to become the fourth-fastest American this year, and he looks poised to build on his recent success this year.<\/p>\n<p>Later on in the intrasquad meet, Hobson also won the 500 free in 4:16.48, and the other meet record went to junior <strong>David Johnston<\/strong>, who swam a mark of 8:49.13 in the 1000 free to break <strong>Alex Zettle&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>record set last season.<\/p>\n<p>Hobson and Johnston both represented Team White in this meet, but it was the Orange squad that emerged with a 143-140 win with<strong> Peter<\/strong> <strong>Larson<\/strong>, <strong>Aleksej Filipovic<\/strong>, <strong>Coby Carrozza<\/strong> and <strong>Caspar Corbeau<\/strong> capping off the meet with a 200 free relay triumph in 1:18.90. Elite individual medley performer\u00a0<strong>Carson Foster<\/strong> took three wins for Orange in the 200 IM (1:42.94, just off his 2021 meet record of 1:42.37), 100 backstroke (46.07) and 200 back (1:41.76).<\/p>\n<p>Also for Orange, NCAA 100 breaststroke runnerup <strong>Caspar Corbeau<\/strong> swept the 100 breast (52.56) and 200 breast (1:54.72), while diver\u00a0<strong>Noah Duperre<\/strong> won 1-meter (340.95) and 3-meter (357.00). For the White team,\u00a0<strong>Danny Krueger<\/strong> won the 50 free (19.54) and 100 free (42.78), and\u00a0<strong>Cole Crane<\/strong> touched first in the 100 butterfly (46.85) and 200 fly (1:45.46).<\/p>\n<p>This year, the Texas intrasquad was renamed the Sam Kendricks Memorial Orange and White Classic in honor of\u00a0<strong>Sam Kendricks<\/strong>, the public address announcer at so many elite competitions at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center and around the country as well as a former student manager for the Longhorn men&#8217;s team and coach for the Texas women. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/legendary-announcer-sam-kendricks-passes-away-his-voice-will-be-missed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kendricks passed away in July after a battle with Merkel Cell Carcinoma<\/a>, and Texas will continue to recognize him this season, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sam-kendricks-celebration-of-life-will-be-held-november-5-in-austin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a celebration of life event scheduled for right after the Texas-Virginia dual meet in November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/texassports.com\/news\/2022\/9\/22\/mens-swimming-and-diving-orange-team-claims-first-sam-kendricks-memorial-orange-white-classic.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read the full press release from Texas here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Luke Hobson Swims 1:32.50 200 Free at Texas Intrasquad, Breaking Kibler&#8217;s Meet Record The Texas men&#8217;s swim team kicked off the new college season at an annual intrasquad meet.
