﻿{"id":512882,"date":"2022-09-09T08:53:01","date_gmt":"2022-09-09T15:53:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=512882"},"modified":"2022-09-09T08:53:01","modified_gmt":"2022-09-09T15:53:01","slug":"usa-swimming-announces-selection-process-for-2022-short-course-world-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-swimming-announces-selection-process-for-2022-short-course-world-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"USA Swimming Announces Selection Process for 2022 Short Course World Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>USA Swimming has released its criteria for selecting swimmers for the 2022 Short Course World Championships in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The governing body of the sport in the U.S. released its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/\/news\/u-s-names-99-swimmers-to-2022-23-u-s-national-team\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national team<\/a> earlier this week and the roster for Short Course Worlds, which takes place Dec. 8-12 in Melbourne, is expected to be released in October.<\/p>\n<p>The selection process is broken down into different priorities designated by USA Swimming.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Priority # 1<\/strong> . The first priority will be comprised of the Available Swimmers who have the first and second fastest Times in the 50 &#8211; meter and 100 &#8211; meter Freestyle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 5\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 5\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><strong>Priority #2<\/strong>. The second priority will be comprised of the Available Swimmers who have the fastest Times in each of the Individual Olympic Events other than the 50 &#8211; meter 100 &#8211; meter Freestyle .<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><strong>Priority # 3<\/strong> . The third priority will be comprised of the Available Swimmer who has the second fastest Time in the 200 &#8211; meter Freestyle .<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><strong>Priority #4<\/strong>.\u00a0 he fourth priority will be comprised of the Available Swimmers who have the second fastest Times in each of the Individual Olympic Events other than the 50 ,100 , and 200 &#8211; meter Freestyle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Then it goes on to the other Olympic stroke events.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<blockquote><p><em>Subject to the application of the priorities described in Section 1.3 . 3 above and the other rules set forth in this Section 1. 3. 4 , it is generally anticipated that the fastest Times among Available Swimmers in each Individual Olympic Event will qualify for the Team and the athletes who qualify via Section 1.3. 3 will be given the opportunity to swim the corresponding individual Event at the Championships (for example, the top two fastest Times among Available Swimmers in the 200 &#8211; meter Butterfly will swim the 200 &#8211; meter Butterfly at the Championships ). However, FINA has a requirement that in order for two athletes to compete in an individual Event at the Championships , both athletes must have a Time that meets or exceeds the \u201c A \u201d Time Standard in a competition approved for that purpose by FINA. Note: the \u201c A \u201d Time Standard can be achieved at any FINA approved competition within from July 24, 2021 \u2013 August 31, 2022 and athletes may have times in either Long Course Meters or Short Course Meters (note: performances achieved in Short Course Meters will be considered for entry in individual Events (i.e., to demonstrate that an Available Swimmer has met the \u201cA\u201d Time Standard) but not for Selection to the Team under the Priorities above) .<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<blockquote><p><em>If the Available Swimmer in an Event with the fastest Time has achieved an \u201cA\u201d Time Standard and the Available Swimmer with the second fastest Time in an Event does not achieve an \u201cA\u201d Time Standard, only the Available Swimming in the E vent with the with the fastest Time that has an \u201cA\u201d Time Standard will be Selected to the Team and only one swimmer will swim that Event at the Championships .<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2022-short-course-world-championships-selection-process\/international-elite\/2022\/September\/9?rtn=%2Fresults%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Full Selection Process<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 6\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>USA Swimming will select up to 16 swimmers per gender for the meet. If there are more than 16 who qualify, the swimmers will be ranked by priority:<\/p>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u2022 All Available Swimmers from Priority #1 shall be Selected to the Team.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 All Available Swimmers from Priority #2 will be Selected to the Team; provided, however, that if adding all Available Swimmers from Priority #2 would result in more than 16 swimmers for a gender to be Selected to the Team, then the Available Swimmers within Priority #2 shall be Selected to the Team in order of the highest Percentage of \u201cA\u201d Time Standard , based on the Time in the Event that qualified that Available Swimmer for Priority #2, until a maximum of 16 swimmers for that gender are Selected to the Team.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u2022 If all Priority #2 swimmers are Selected to the Team and the maximum Team size of 16 swimmers per gender has not been attained, then the Available Swimmer from Priority #3 ( i.e., the Available Swimmer who has the second fastest Time in the 200 &#8211; meter Freestyle ) will be Selected to the Team. If more than one Available Swimmer per gender has the second fastest Time in the 200 &#8211; meter Freestyle, and adding all Available Swimmers with that second fastest Time to the Team would result in more than 16 swimmers for a gender Selected to the Team, the tie will be broken pursuant to Section 1.3.6.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u2022 If all Priority # 3 swimmers are Selected to the Team and the maximum Team size of 16 swimmers per gender has not been attained, then the same procedure of using the highest Percentage of \u201cA\u201d Time Standard will be used to rank the Available Swimmers from Priority # 4 , based on the Time in the Event that qualified that Available Swimmer for Priority #4, and Priority # 4 Available Swimmers will be Selected to the Team in order of their highest Percentage of \u201cA\u201d Time Standard until the Team is full.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<p>For the non-Olympic events \u2014 the 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly \u2014 swimmers who qualify in the stroke&#8217;s 100-meter events can enter. If there is still an opening, spots will be offered to the swimmer already on the team with the next-fastest time in the 100-meter race, provided they\u2019ve achieved the FINA \u2018A\u2019 standard.<\/p>\n<p>For the 100 IM, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Swimming<\/a> stated swimmers already on the team will be eligible to race it provided they\u2019ve achieved the FINA \u2018A\u2019 cut at a FINA-approved competition between July 24, 2021 and November 5, 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>USA Swimming has released its criteria for selecting swimmers for the 2022 Short Course World Championships in Australia.
