gold medal or broken record as they etch their names in the history of the sport.<\/p>\n<p>But what makes swimming so great is the heroics of swimmers outside the pool, like Olympic gold medalist<strong> Crissy Perham<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympian-crissy-perham-after-donating-kidney-to-richard-franklin-i-did-what-i-felt-moved-to-do-kidney-given-a-special-name\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">donating a kidney to<\/a> <strong>Richard \u201cDick\u201d Franklin<\/strong>, father of <strong>Missy Franklin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And there are loads of other examples, including:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/legacy-of-missy-franklin-will-forever-bring-a-smile-to-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Missy Franklin<\/a>, Michael Phelps<\/strong> and <strong>Allison Schmitt<\/strong> advocating for mental health<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Cullen Jones, Simone Manuel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimmers-for-change-launched-by-lia-neal-jacob-pebley-30-team-usa-swimmers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lia Neal<\/a>,<\/strong> <strong>Reece Whitley, Giles Smith<\/strong> and <strong>Natalie Hinds<\/strong> (and more) helping raise awareness for diversity<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympian-kara-lynn-joyce-continues-to-give-back-to-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">through LEAD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Amy VanDyken<\/strong> raising awareness for swimmers with different abilities and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/amy-van-dyken-inspiring-with-fitness-which-saved-my-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inspiring comeback stories<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Rebecca Soni, Caroline Burckle<\/strong> and <strong>Kristy Kowal<\/strong> starting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rebecca-soni-and-caroline-burckle-making-a-difference-through-rise-athletes-mentorship-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mentorship<\/a> programs for swimmers<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Paralympic swimmers who inspire on a daily basis<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/natalie-coughlin-dishes-on-motherhood-new-cook-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Natalie Coughlin<\/strong> <\/a>and <strong>Matt Grevers<\/strong> simply being extraordinary examples of showing they can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-world-magazine-september-2020-issue-matt-grevers-still-chasing-excellence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as good of parents<\/a> as they were swimmers (not including what else they do as ambassadors of the sport)<\/p>\n<p>And those are just a few examples. There are many more swimmers and coaches who have had an immense impact on the sport and beyond with what they do out of the water.<\/p>\n<p>Perham joined that list when she donated a kidney to Dick Franklin. The 1992 Olympic gold medalist created this amazing bond with the families of two Olympic gold medal swimmers with her generosity and bravery. Fittingly, Missy dubbed the kidney \u201cOlympia\u201d and spoke of heroes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy hero (and Crissy, Crissy is my hero too),\u201d Missy posted about her father. \u201cMy dad is 77, an age that some hospitals don\u2019t even DO organ transplants for. Today, he is three days post transplant with NORMAL levels for the first time in two decades. He and Crissy (our angel, his donor, and our new family) are doing phenomenal. \u2026 Live organ donation SAVES. LIVES. It gives people the gift of time with their loved ones. There is NO greater gift. I have YEARS to spend with my father, and my daughter has YEARS to spend with her grandfather. And not just years, but wonderful, healthy years because of Crissy, her heart, and her perfect, beautiful kidney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is one of swimming\u2019s amazing moments, and it didn\u2019t come in the pool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeet my guardian angel Crissy Perham,\u201d Dick Franklin posted on Facebook. \u201cWe are both out of the hospital and doing well. \u2026 I am beyond words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With so many swimmers raising awareness for worthy causes, this is the time to raise awareness for live donors. Healthy adults can save lives.<\/p>\n<p>Franklin said more than 40 people signed up for donation after his wife, D.A. Franklin, posted in January about the level of help Dick would need to survive.<\/p>\n<p>It sounds like a lot but 40, when you screen out matches and other things, could be just a handful of people, which is a blessing, but could also be more.<\/p>\n<p>Often times it takes a cause hitting home for people to act. Well this cause hit home to the swimming world on both fronts. It is an amazing story of generosity from a donor, to an amazing story of survival for the recipient. And they are both integral people within the sport of swimming.<\/p>\n<p>Plus that is just one person needing a donor, and there are thousands. In fact, D.A. Franklin said Dick\u2019s sister, who happens to be Missy\u2019s Godmother, also received a kidney just six weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>Live donors completely changed the course of the Franklin family. Without them, Missy could have lost a father and a Godmother, and her daughter, would have never remembered them.
