Australia&#8217;s Olympic Program Swimmer Of The Year At Glittering Awards Ceremony in Sydney<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Teenage sensation <strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong> has tonight beaten an all-star field to be crowned the Australian Olympic Swimmer of the Year at a glittering awards ceremony in Sydney tonight.<\/p>\n<p>A night that saw the inaugural induction of five swimming legends <strong>Freddie Lane\u00a0<\/strong>(Dolphin #1),\u00a0<strong>Fanny Durack\u00a0<\/strong>(Dolphin #9),\u00a0<strong>Dawn Fraser\u00a0<\/strong>(Dolphin #86),\u00a0<strong>Shane Gould\u00a0<\/strong>(Dolphin #214) and\u00a0<strong>Ian Thorpe\u00a0<\/strong>(Dolphin #494) into the Swimming Australia Hall Of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>An honour that may well one day await the 18-year-old from Brisbane\u2019s St Peters Western who has capped a stellar 12 months winning her maiden World and Commonwealth Games gold medals in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-mollie-ocallaghan-times-it-to-perfection-to-win-the-100-free-sjostrom-huske-on-podium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blue ribband 100m freestyle<\/a> events.<\/p>\n<p>Fittingly an event that saw Durack become the first ever female swimming gold medallist in Stockholm in 1912 and Fraser become the first Olympian to win three consecutive events \u2013 the 100m freestyle in 1956, 1960 and 1964.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Callaghan\u2019s 2022 successes came after a golden Olympic apprenticeship where she swam in the heats of Australia\u2019s gold medal winning 4x100m freestyle and medley relays.<\/p>\n<p>And she wasted no time launching an international individual career in a group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian<\/a> female freestylers that have taken the world by storm.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022 the name \u201cMollie O\u201d has become the name on so many swimming lips \u2013 as she joined fellow stars <strong>Emma McKeon, Ariarne Titmus<\/strong>, <strong>Kaylee McKeown<\/strong>, <strong>Zac Stubblety-Cook<\/strong> and <strong>Elijah Winnington<\/strong> in a group of swimming superstars that has captured the imagination of the Australian sporting public.<\/p>\n<p>She became Australia\u2019s latest world champion in Budapest \u2013 joining the likes of <strong>Jodie Henry, Libby Trickett <\/strong>and <strong>Cate <\/strong>and <strong>Bronte Campbell<\/strong> as winners of the 100m freestyle and the coveted Swimmer of the Year Award.<\/p>\n<p>In a remarkable rise for O\u2019Callaghan her 2022 successes included 13 medals across the FINA World Championships and Birmingham Commonwealth Games, becoming the youngest woman in 30 years to win the 100m freestyle World Championship when he USA\u2019s N<strong>icole Haislett<\/strong> won the title in Perth in 1991 and also being a member of two World Record Photo Courtesy: Delly Carr (Swimming Australia).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Joining O\u2019Callaghan on the top of the podium was <strong>Paralympic Swimmer of the Year Rowan Crothers<\/strong>, who had a year in which the boy from Brisbane\u2019s Yeronga Park cemented himself as the fastest male freestyle sprinter with a disability in the world, securing the 50 and 100m freestyle double at the World Para Swimming Championships in Madeira, Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020 Crothers claimed his maiden Paralympic gold medal and he has quickly become one of the faces of Australia\u2019s Paralympic program.<\/p>\n<p>In other awards, Noosa\u2019s<strong> Nicholas Sloman\u00a0<\/strong> was named\u00a0<strong>Open Water<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Swimmer of the Year\u00a0<\/strong>after securing the 5km\/10km double at the Australian Championships before an impressive three race campaign at the Open Water World Championships in Budapest in June.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dean Boxall\u00a0<\/strong>was crowned both\u00a0<strong>Olympic\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Youth Coach of the Year\u00a0<\/strong>alongside\u00a0<strong>Kate Sparkes\u00a0<\/strong>as the\u00a0<strong>Paralympic Coach of the Year<\/strong>, while Sloman\u2019s coach\u00a0<strong>John Rodgers\u00a0<\/strong>took home his fourth consecutive\u00a0<strong>Open Water Coach of the Year\u00a0<\/strong>award.<\/p>\n<p><strong>William Yang\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Sam Short\u00a0<\/strong>were also named joint winners of the\u00a0<strong>AIS<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Discovery of the Year\u00a0<\/strong>following their breakthrough campaigns at the FINA World Championships in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p>Other winners on the night included\u00a0<strong>Phil Jobling\u00a0<\/strong>as the Roger Smith Technical Official of the Year, the\u00a0<strong>Immanuel Piranhas Swim Club<\/strong>\u00a0as Club of the Year and\u00a0<strong>Emy Simsic\u00a0<\/strong>from Geelong Swimming Club as Local Legend of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming Australia CEO, <strong>Eug\u00e9nie Buckley,<\/strong> congratulated the star Dolphins trio on their incredible achievements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are immensely proud of all that Rowan, Mollie and Nicholas have achieved this year and fortunate to have\u00a0ambassadors for our sport like them that represent the commitment, excellence and humility so central to being a Dolphin,\u201d Buckley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir accolades are reflective of the collective success of our Dolphins teams across this incredible year, including our most successful overseas Commonwealth Games campaign on record and a piece of history in Portugal that saw our Para World Championship team become the first Australian travelling swim team where every eligible athlete returned home with a medal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis team continues to set the standard and, in doing so, inspires the next generation of Dolphins and for that they deserve our admiration and respect. Tonight has been a fitting celebration of all our athletes have achieved, in conjunction with their coaches and the support staff, while representing us with such pride on the international
